How to get spoiled food?

All food and drinks have a countdown meter on them. when that countdown ends, you food expires and becomes spoiled food.

I am assuming you need it to build the planters?

Just keep food stored until they spoil. In the last patch they added a proper countdown in the item's description, but there is a thin white bar bellow them that indicates how long it will take for them to spoil. I think the fastest ones to spoil are berries and vegetables (corn, potato, beets).

Go to the coast and farm the shell rocks and get shellfish you get quite a bit from them and they expire in 4 hours

Farm something that drops meat, dump meat in a storage chest, wait, ???, profit!

Shellfish is fastest, especially if you have Canned Seafood and Solar Drill/Advanced Drill. Easily get a few thousand in five minutes.
