Congratulations on "Best Game You Suck At" 2023!
I really don't know if anyone from Sloclap will read anything from this discussion, but I do hope at least it'll reach to the community here!

Sifu has been a dream game for me: an in-depth and satisfying close-quarters brawler, and the Asian setting is the frosting on top.

Up to Sifu, I didn't have an experience where a game asks of me to hone my mistakes, just for the sake of it.

Taking this experience to other games has opened myself to a new level of enjoyment, and I'm relieved that other people agree the stern path has been satiating, if not, an enjoyment.

Congratulations again on the award, it's truly earned.:er_heart:

I'll forever hold Sifu close, and I'll forever be learning and rising.

You should check out Absolver then. It's way more of a martial art sandbox with a heavy focus on INTRINSIC motivation to grow; so much so that most people booted it up and never came back, and still the majority that did rely on meta decks someone else made because even they couldn't cut it. Sifu took that and heavily casualified it by removing all of the meat. Although it's lacking in the story and cinematic feel of Sifu, it makes up for it in the feeling of going from nobody to grand master of your own school and style with the hardest part, no real motivation given to you except your own, well, outside of Sloclaps love for awful cameras.

So, hardest game you suck at? Maybe because the real games people suck at are seldom played or remembered.

I have to admit I did vote and make this the "Game I suck at" in my nominations.

I found this an enjoyable challenge and I love the replay editor which allows for making your own kung-fu movies.

I have to agree with above about the camera. It is the same in Sekiro - which I find this game reminds me of. Interesting death mechanic, raw and frenetic combat action. One of my favourite games of this year.
Quite happy as well that Sifu won the category, the game is wonderfully unique ^^

It was definitely a tough competing category with Street Fighter being nominated as well.
Great game but probably shouldn't have been eligible this year given it really game out a year ago on epic.

Steam should consider blacklisting any epic exclusives from the steam game awards.
Yep but at the same time it's a steam award, and it only came out this year on steam.
Uhhh...

It's confusing that a game like this wins "BEST GAME" that you suck at.

Am I missing something here? Because, the graphics and gameplay look like a mid-90's game.

Is it really that much better than all the other AAA games? I'm ... just really confused.

I hate to play the "dude I have been gaming since 1980's and know your talking nonsense" card, but here you go!

You're talking nonsense.

on the other hand from the other guys, i can probably explain well,

i can't necessarily compare what's your framework of graphics and gameplay in 1995 would be, but i'll give it my best shot and take it from a different angle:

technical standpoint on the graphics: maybe simplicity is intended to ease the eyes on enemy movesets without frivolous details getting in the mind of the player.
why work for more polygons to make them more pretty when figuring what would make them stand out and contrast is much more important for a intimate brawler?
most of the enemies has 1-3 colors on their outfits without too many accessories to draw too much attention from the most important thing about them: their movesets.
and the high contrast funnels the attention to it (ie. flashkick with red boots on a white and black outfit).

artistically, i personally like it, i just have a knack for game where every frame can be hung on a wall and looks like other people look they don't mind/care at the least.
they put the details where it takes up a big space, and spread simple props everywhere. in my mind, it balances well on the pretty/badass scenery while satisfying that the world looks filled. (ie. in the bar/fight room of The Club, unique graffiti and big ass neon signs, but littered with small-poly cigarettes, cans, and drugs.)

gameplay, i suppose compared to (my understanding of) AAA games, i'd say what separates Sifu is their {b}honed{/b} and {b}expanded{/b} combat system. not saying other game thought or haven't done it before, but since we're talking about 2023 awards and the finalists:
above all else, i'd say they did try gameplay-first: they tied the combat systems to the player's expected curvature of learning (ie. death, score, xp, character upgrades, permanent skills)
and hand out a handful variety of moves (crowd control, opponent control, trolling them).
they did up the variety of takedowns, not only in "how many" but "where many" (ie. opponent against a wall, behind an opponent against a counter)
Sloclap seems to genuinely really want to sell the experience of practice and mastery by giving their own take of an improved brawler genre of their vision, and looks like it turned out that other players happen to agree on their take.

this is all in the top of my head, perhaps getting your own experience to form your own opinion is best, or continue watching other more thought-out reviews

Not sure what graphics have to do with an award for 'difficulty,' but aight.
Sloclap games also don't go so much for graphical fidelity as they go for uniquely stylized and painterly ones. If you actually look at their 3d work, you'll note that they're very talented in that regard as well, so there's nothing inherently stopping them from making true-to-life graphics if they wanted.
I'm pretty sure they also contract work FROM freelance aaa artists as well... to make your last point seem silly.
And to your point, it doesn't take much to be better than a AAA game.
The only thing that differentiates them is the amount of money they can burn, and how much they dumb their game down to sell to a wider demographic.

I think you and several people that responded missed the part where it's a "BEST GAME" category. Not a "difficult game" category.

I.E. in order to qualify as a nominee in the difficulty category it also needs to be in the BEST GAME category.

This... does not.

It can be a really difficulty game and it can be really good at being a difficulty game and a really fun difficulty game, but is it a BETTER game than other difficult games? You can have one or other other, but having BOTH is what games SHOULD have been in this category.

Not a "good" game that's also difficulty.

The BEST game that's also difficult.

I'm not sure how much more clear I can make that. Anyway... what's done is done I'm just a bit confused by the award. Don't get me wrong, looks like a fun game. But, it doesn't look like anything compared to some other AAA games out there that do basically the same thing, but prettier, with more content, better graphics, higher replay value, more RPG elements, etc etc etc.

this game is gay as hell
I HATE THIS GAME
