English VA or Japanese VA. What will you choose?
Will you play this with Japanese VA or English?

Personally, I like how consistent the JP VA is with the voice cast, like, it's the same character that dubbed the character from sky that is doing it again here, so it feels consistent while sadly voices change between games way too constantly with the English version, sometimes for the worse sometimes for the best.

As far as I've seen though, the VA looks good this time for me, so I'll give it a chance, I always do, but if I start feeling annoyed by some voices, I will switch back to Japanese. :)

I played many of games where English dub is really good and enjoyable. It just matter of taste. Every Trails game with English voice acting has been excellent thus far.

English of course... I prefer understanding what's being said over gibberish.
Especially some banter that isn't subtitled.
Same with "Xenoblade Chronicles 2", as terrible as the english was, but playing in Japanese means missing out on some lines completely.
English, since starting the franchise I stayed that way whenever it's available.
Jp voice, I love Daisuke Ono and Hikasa Yoko voice acting.
English. I don't really see how the English VAs aren't consistent over the series. There were a few changes in CSIV because of covid and one in Reverie, but 90% of English VAs have remained the same, even those from the Sky arc to the latest games. (Stephanie Sheh as Estelle, Bryce Papenbrook as Gilbert, etc.)

Also, this is a new arc with mostly new characters, so there won't be that many returning characters to be inconsistent anyway.

The returning character Zin got changed, even though the original va was in Reverie. So it happens from time to time
It's not that bad overall and could be a lot worse, but the japanese cast is more consistent, thats just a fact.
Japanese, I enjoy it, especially Yoko Hikasa.

Always Japanese. I absolutely love the range and little details the Japanese VAs bring to these games.

CSIII for reference:
English (2:12):

Japanese (1:31:14):

To me, the English VAs sound sing-songy and ... saucy, I guess? Like they're always being sarcastic, or always trying to deliver a sick burn or sound cool or something?

To me, in Japanese, Juna sounds honestly concerned (fitting for a heart-on-the-sleeve type), and Kurt sounds earnest and level-headed (also fitting for his character). And Altina's VA is just so good at delivering that "I'm annoyed with you, but I'm trying not to openly show it" energy. Not to mention the stuttering in some of the delivery to show shock or uncertainty, or trailing off at the end of sentences...

Not trying to start a fight, though. This is just why I prefer the Japanese VAs.

There are Japanese residents who feel the American voice overs are better while the Americans may feel the Japanese voice overs are better. Saw some examples of this on a post somewhere while back where they are claiming that listening to a foreign language they don't understand is more enjoyable as they cannot detect if it's good or bad if they don't know how the language is supposed to be spoken through emotion or whatever. It's an understandable thing. I like listening to Three Kingdoms from 2010 in its original language, but never liked Trails that wasn't in English as personal taste. Even I loved Estelle's voice when she talked in the later games, but some thought it was awful and unforgivable.

I cannot explain why I love the English ones better in this case but guess it's that I feel like I have a better connection with the characters if they speak my native language.
As Sarah is my favorite character and I got a heart on twitter from her va I'm locked in on english va lol. But usually besides certain settings I'm not overly picky anymore. Used to be the first thing I did was check if jp voices were an option. But we have come a long way.
ENG ones are just incompetent. Always.
Tio from Crossbell (originally Remiferia apparently) had a very appropriate voice for an hypersensitive and very logically-minded person, but I couldn't even begin to understand what the hell she was saying. Meanwhile Tio from Cold Steel had a voice like a mildly retarded meganerd and it was bad but a very fair tradeoff because my mind could actually associate meaning with those mouth-noises. So english it is. Wake me up when there's a third option.

Stephanie Sheh (who dat?) is just fine as Estelle, and she can keep that job no sweat FOR THE EXPRESS REASON that saving the world won't suddenly transform you from a tomboy to the Goddess of Glamour, but as the series advances and she gets more and more lines, it becomes apparent that her pitch-frequency combo isn't the ideal choice for a main character in the long term.

I do want her to come back though. She was the first to save the world, she should also be the last.
Having played through the entire CS arc with English, I decided to try something different and switched to JP, and Van being voiced by Ono Daisuke and Kiryuu's VA being in the game as well made it an easy choice.
