Well it pretty much is just for enjoyment or selling. Though depends on which achivements your going for. Horders arent allowed to sell anything but there is a achivement for selling 300 items also.

Hoard the first time around, after you finish the main quest you can still roam around the town. You'll get the acheivement for finishing the game without selling anything, then can find a shop and get the one for selling 300 junk items.

No. There is nothing like 'turn in 1000 junk items and get an awesome weapon', junk items are junk. Meant to be sold (or hoarded)
