Game freezing PC

i load LOTRO from Steam, it asks if i want to enable DX11 (i do) and when it gets to the character select screen the sound starts making odd beeps and then the whole PC starts to run really slow and then eventually freezes my PC.

Windows 7 Ultimate
Nvidia 970
Intel Core i7 2600
8GB ram

i can play Dragon Age Inquisition and other games so there is nothing wrong with my PC itself.

Try setting your PC to DX9 mode for character creation, then reverting to DX11 once you've got your character setup. There are known issues with character creation > DX9.

Do not use DX10 or 11 -- it does not work. Use DX9 to get started.

I have been told (as mentioned above) that once you get past Character creation, you can switch to 10 or 11, but since I play on a Mac, I use OpenGL, so I can't tell you for certain.

Just tried to start the game in DX9 instead and the game still locks the PC up a few seconds after the character select screen loads. i cannot even change the graphics settings or do anything before it freezes..ugh...the thought of downloading the 18GB again

One other idea, before you go there: on the off-hand chance that it's permissions-related, try starting the Steam client as administrator, then launching the LOTRO launcher from the Library.

i deleted the game and am re-downloading. almost there haha... i live in the middle of no where so my download speed is slow (900kb)

Just finished the Download and patches and it still crashes...Does not matter if i just mash esc to get to the character select fast or if i just let everything play normally..the game will freeze my PC after 15 seconds no matter what is on the screen.

Guess it was not meant to be.

You can change the Graphics Settings from the Launcher -- click the down-arrow at the top right and select Options.

The other thing I have seen people comment on -- turn off any proxy settings.

Do you have a sound card installed? Try switching it to software audio instead of hardware audio and try again. Turbine games have issues with sound blaster cards for some strange reasons.

i had steam run an integrity test and it said found 19 items that needed to be downloaded and it started to download the game again (14GB) and after that i still have the game freeze at the start <,<

Gave up and went back to ArcheAge and Rift

Too late now, but never, ever have Steam verify the integrity. It always comes out wrong because Steam expects you to be using the exact same files as the ones you initially downloaded. Those, of course, are out of date.
