You can, theoretically (or so Ive been told) get through the base game without having to buy anything, but it requires you to play in a very certain way that you may not particularly like. I found that I had to start buying basic things like more inventory space/shared inventory and raising my gold cap quite soon (level 10 onwards).

It is free to try. You will need to buy stuff and quest packs from the store past level 25. Free to play characters are gimped with having to unlock their trait slots, having smaller bags and bank, gold cap, etc. Theoretically, a free account player can reach level 115 like the rest of the players but that experience will be totally different. Free account characters can earn some store coin by playing the game.

Pretty much this.

Entire game is F2P,. Though F2P imo is one heck of an unfun to me and dedicated grind for LotRO Points (LPs). Realistically you will need to buy the Quad Pack for $10 USD on sale and maybe a month of VIP as well. Mordor will be available for LP's when you need it.

Friend of mine was unemployed when he started playing. He got one month VIP to qualify as a Premium player and for the travel unlocks and basically ground the points he needed to buy expansions etc paying attention to sales and so on.

Apart from a few pressies to himself later he's basically got to cap that way. So it is - or was, anyway - perfectly possible to be very nearly ftp if you are prepared to grind for points.

yeah i recommend just 1 month of VIP, start all the characters that you might wanna play during that month then buy the quad pack and other expansions on steam sale prices. Then watch the sales and buy some quest packs on sale.

FWIW that pretty much sums up the F2P game model.

Shame on the developers for having to pay bills themselves!

It is a very free game. You will easily unlock the first quest pack by lvl 30 (Evendim, always Evendim), and with the Christmas sales coming up, you should be able to buy a second one, like Angmar. Then you are screwed until the next Christmas, but you can get to lvl 50 that way, and it's fun. I personally have only bought Evendim, Angmar, two Apprentice horses and my top char is lvl 64, with over 900 points in the bank for Christmas. I kinda wish I'd bought Angmar though.

Is better you didn't buy angmar... the instances there are fun, but most players tend to skip the area as it's very grindy. You should be able to make it to lvl 50 by then, and mvoe on into Moria at that stage.
Evendim instances are still quite popular for levelling players and you can earn points in them of course so worth it.

Not only that, but if you follow the epic story, you'll spend a lot of time in Angmar anyway. Might as well get the area and get the deeds :-)
Lord Banterhead Oct 21, 2017 @ 7:54am
And if you are Hunter you get two "Travel to Angmar" skills, which are really useful as Angmar has nearly zero non-VIP travel optios apart from that.

Basically, you get store points for completing achievements which are called Deeds. You will gain the points passively for a lot of things without even trying. Other times you might have to stay in an area to kill more of the mobs in order to complete a Deed.

Its possible to keep creating a new character, completing a load of deeds in the first zone and then delete them so you can do it again.

This way you can earn infinite store points and get almost all of the game for free.

The only thing you can't get for free is the latest expansion because it hasn't been added to the store yet. It will be added eventually though.

There's a good guide in the community section here on Steam that explains how to earn store points by making new characters:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=409373382

I do what that guide says about twice a week so it doesn't get too boring and then just play normally on my main character. The store points are filling up nicely.
