Tips and tidbits to help improve your game.
(If this is better off as a guide, let me know, and i'll make this into a guide instead)

To possibly help players out in knowing how the game works, etc, I decided to make this thread to give some useful info on the game and hopefully help you implement it into your game.

==================================================================

Drifts

Drift Charge Times
Level 1: 1.8 Seconds
Level 2: 4.4 Seconds
Level 3: 7 Seconds

You will start charging another boost 0.5 seconds after you did your drift boost.

You can chain a drift after 0.175 seconds, any lower and you can't chain a drift.

Remember that if you chain a drift, you will reset the charge time of the current boost level you're on. This does not apply to level 3 however.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Drift Rolling

A useful trick that can help you go faster in the air during car/boat sections. You can use this in parts where you jump into the air, be it from ramps or big jumps.

Keep a drift held as you approach the ramp/jump, when you're in the air, roll the opposite direction you're facing. This will propel you in a more faster direction.

Not only will you get stunt boosts from it, but you're also charging your drift boost as you do this, allowing you to combine the boosts together.

==================================================================

Stunts

Stunt Times

Car: 0.6 Seconds
Boat: 0.6 Seconds
Plane: 0.85 Seconds

To successfully combine stunts, you'll need to stunt later than 0.55 seconds. If you stunt any faster than that, you'll get a stunt fail.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can achieve a level 3 boost from three flips/rolls, but perform several stunts in different directions for a level 4 boost, for example:

Up > Down > Left, or Left > Up > Down.

Rolling at a slight angle can make you move faster in the air in some cases during boat sections. Position your boat at a slight left/right angle, then roll in the opposite direction while keeping that angle. You can also combine this with the level 4 boost stunts. The difficulty of this trick depends on the handling stat of your mod.

==================================================================

Transform Rings

You can get insane height from a transform ring during plane sections, leading to a huge boost of speed when falling down.

Depending on the track, this can be easy or hard. Rogue's Landing is a good place to try this.

As you approach the ring, move your plane up so you catch the end/very end of the ring. Make sure you're moving up when you hit it. You should be very high in the air now, this will give you a good opportunity to get a level 4 boost out, aswell as get a huge speed boost from the jump.

Note: You will need to correct yourself in the air doing this trick, you could find yourself smashing the wall otherwise.

==================================================================

This thread is a WIP, more is due to come.

If you have any suggestions, feel free to add them here!

Tidbits about Boosts:

=================================================================

Most of you guys probably know about the different levels of boosts, if you don't, make sure to check out <eVa>Zork Nemesis's guide on Time Trials and Yokozuna sticker, it's really informative for the basics.

This next paragraph with go in-depth about the boosts properties and details and how to stack them to go faster, whether you're playing Matchmaking or Time Attack, here's how it goes:

-All the levels of boosts have an initial effect of 2.5 seconds where you can see the flame behind your vehicle.

-The higher level of boost, the slower your vehicle will decelerate back to it's original speed.

-Boosts do not "stack" per se, they multiply your speed by a certain value for their whole duration. The multiplier values are:

Level 6 - 1.32
Level 5 - 1.26
Level 4 - 1.2
Level 3 - 1.14
Level 2 - 1.09
Level 1 - 1.03

-Boost pads and Dream Valley rings give Level 1 boosts.

-Boost items gives a Level 4 boost.

-When using several boosts at the same time your deceleration will correspond to the level of boost you used last.

================================================================

What does all this means about how you should manage your boosts? :

1) You should always release the most powerful boost you have LAST. The optimal way would be starting them at exactly the same time but this is not humanly possible, so go with what you see and release your boosts as close together as you can.

Example:

You have a level 3 drift and there is a boost pad(Level 1).

If you release your level 3 boost then hit the boost pad, you will get a level 4 (orange flames).

But if you hit the boost pad first, then release your level 3 drift, you will also get a level 4 (orange flames) except you will go fast for a much much longer time than the previous situation, because you will get a level 3 deceleration instead of a level 1 deceleration.

Example2:

You have just released a level 3+ boost, there is no more flames behind your vehicle.
In front of you there is a ramp where you can do a level 1 stunt from.

Not stunting there is faster than stunting.

Simply because the deceleration you're getting from that level 3+ that finished is REALLY slow and by stunting, you cancel it back to a level 1 deceleration, so people that did not stunt, will catch up to you.

==============================================================

There are many situations like that where stacking boosts without a set order or priority will not make you go as fast as you can.

And if you're not going fast... you're not playing a Sonic game.

Protip; dont crash to walls, dont even touch them at all, thats the trick for winning burning depths and chilly castle every time, also on those two and some other tracks its smarter to have more handling and/or acceration than going for maxium speed/boost

Holy Silver...

Those stats regarding boosting are extremely interesting. How did you managed to bring it out of the game? it's all in the game files or you made a in-game tests?

Anyway, awesome work. Do a guide... auto 5 stars.

In the process of making the guide. Though i've never wrote guides for Steam before, so it'll look like a mess for now.

Unless anyone would like to help improve it, you're more than welcome to!

Hmmm. IceBlade. Did you not underestimated the Speed Stat?

Let's make some calculations. Let's take the car only situation, then a pro player can maintain the level 2 boost all the time (I know that si kinda crazy, but let's see).

We have to cars: Car A: Speed: 5 / Boost:1. Car B: Speed: 1 / Boost 5

Base speed
Car A: 1.01823
Car B: 0.98005

Level 2 Boost: +9%

Overall Boost bonus, taking Boost stat to account:
Car A: 0.09 * 0.70000 = 0.063
Car B: 0,09 * 1.32821 = 0,011

Final speed:
Car A: 1,0182 + 6,3% = 1.0823
Car B: 0,9801 + 11% = 1.0878

Boost car still wins, but it is a 0.005 difference. Of course, I could make a mistake in calculations. Also, It depends how much my "Pro player will maintain the level 2 boost all time in the race" guestimate is near true.
IceBlade Jun 3, 2013 @ 4:24am
You're forgetting the bonus speed bled from boost as it takes a while for your speed to decelerate from a boost-level to normal max top speed. Also, given the strength of higher level boosts, you'd probably find out that the overall speed gained on a single lap (depending on level) would be higher than 9% from a perma level 2 boost.
I'm going to work on taking a couple of maps as examples to see boost uptime at different levels.
