I prefer Mario Kart, but both are great games, I suppose it's mainly to do with if you prefer Nintendo design or SEGA design.
Although in a few ways, I really appreciate Sonic Transformed, mainly for being a Diddy Kong racing sequel.
Apparently so much fun, in fact, that they weren't nominally usable online. But that doesn't matter in the PC port (what is online multiplayer???/ lol I dunno)
Or in Gum's case, lay down heart mines.
More fun, more skill-based, faster, better races, much more intelligent level-design. And a challenging single-player.
Mario Kart has always been extremely casual. There is a little bit of skill available, but rubberbanding and item spam always gets the better of it.
Crash Team Racing was fantastic in the sense that it was a better version of MK64. The items were almost the same, but the tweaked drift boost mechanic combined with the fact that there was almost no rubberbanding left most of the game up to player skill. YOU got to the shortcuts. YOU did your boosts correctly.
SART is more comparable to MK7 though. However, the face value of each is the only comparison. SART's items aren't direct copies as there are different uses for each. The control of the game is based almost entirely on player skill. Each obstacle you encounter requires the player to react in a certain way. After putting in so many hours, the AI becomes a breeze (if not, just a slight annoyance) even on expert races. The game EXPECTS you to use the online feature because the developers aren't idiots and know that they cannot predict a skill limit of the players. If I come in first in a race that means I'm better at the game, go practice.
Mario Kart doesn't do this. Countless time in MK7 and in MKDD I have led a race only to be blue shell'd and stuck in last. AGAINST BOTS. In the series' attempt to make races fair for all parties, skilled or not, it lets down those who put effort into being good. Rubberbanding is the absolute BANE of a racing game, kart racer or not. In both SART and CTR i have overlapped opponents many a time, but i have never done so in any Mario Kart game (even on 50CC!).
But I guess thats my opinion.
