When you look critically, MK8 has many flaws.

Not that SASRT is bad, it's still a fun game to play. But MK8 is just much better designed. Better tracks, better controls, better music, etc. It even looks better.
The only thing MK8 has done absolutely wrong is the Battle Mode. They replaced confined arena levels like Block Fort with normal race tracks! That's just awful! Makes me wonder if they spent so much time on the main game that they just rushed making Battle Mode...
I could be wrong, but I think you can adjust items in online tourneys. I remember seeing some sort of toggle when I watched the Direct. Maybe they let us turn them off too? And maybe in other modes?
To any real player seeking to improve on their skill, Items make sure you can't unilize it, this game is for casuals only.
SASRT is a game based primarily in skill. You have to really grasp the game's mechanics both item wise and driving wise to really do well in SASRT. This is seen even in Single Player Mode; some of it's challenges are down right mean and difficult to the very core (Traffic Attack anyone?). If you are good at SASRT, items might give you a little bit of trouble; but once in the lead almost nothing can stop you. You earn your wins and it feels good.
Mario Kart 8 is a game where skill is maybe half the battle. Grasping the driving mechanics is important, but items negate some of that hard earned skill. The items in the Mario Kart series in general ensure that players with less skill have a chance to pass players with more skill far more often (and with far less effort) than in SASRT. And it's Single Player AI is either a complete joke (far too easy) or gets insanely lucky at the last minute (though not often). As has been said a few times before, Mario Kart is more of a party game. Skill alone will not save you from the terrors of the Red Shells/Blue Shells/Lightning.
Mario Kart 8 however shot itself in the foot with Battle Mode and it's Roster. A good portion of its roster are altered versions of the same character (Gold Pink Peach, Metal Mario, the Baby Characters) or one of the Koopalings (whom are effectively the same character). SASRT has a more interesting roster of characters to choose from and does it's other modes better than Mario Kart 8.
In the end, SASRT is more fun if you want to invest your time and really do well based on Skill. Mario Kart is fun if you just want to pick up a racing game and take a chance in multiplayer.
I kind of agree with the roster thing, although the Koopa Kids are in different weight classes.
Also, the main reason Transformed's roster is more interesting, is because it's doing something Nintendo would probably never dare do; it has characters from MANY SEGA franchises, not just Sonic. Why Nintendo seems to avoid making a "Smash Bros Kart" or something is beyond me. I mean, they already do a good enough job with the tracks when it's just the Mario universe. Imagine how crazy-bonkers-awesome it would be if they threw some Zelda, Metroid, etc into the mix? It would amp up the variety by a HUGE amount, characters AND tracks-wise (maybe even the items), and would probably bring a long-needed breath of fresh air to the series.
In other words, SEGA does what Nintendon't... weird, it's been decades, SEGA is no longer a console maker, and yet, that still holds true.
Yet previous Mario Karts had better rosters. There are plenty of other characters they could have put in place of the Koopalings or even the Baby characters (that have also appeared previously) such as R.O.B., Birdo, Dry Bones, Bowser Jr, Diddy Kong, Funky Kong, King Boo, Petey Piranha, or even Wiggler. It just seems they decided not to bring any of those characters back for whatever reason.
Also, Mario Kart Arcade GP had Namco characters (Pac-Man Characters as one example), but its obviously an arcade game.
But I agree. I miss Dry Bones and R.O.B myself. The only character that I like that I feel makes me a bit different is... Koopa Troopa. No idea why.
I think the Mario Kart GP games are developed by Namco, hence the crossovers. Although I wouldn't mind Pac and a ghost or two joining up on the console/ handheld games.
Was always a fan of R.O.B., but I've settled with Rosalina.
They were Co-Developed by Namco yes. But the GP games aren't nearly as well known or popular (only in arcades) which might be one indication as why Nintendo doesn't do crossovers in their Mario Kart games.
