Starbound, especially with mods, is incredibly in depth. You can use Frackin Universe if you want a vastly different progression system, or skip FU and just use Elithian Races/Arcana/Shellguard etc.. Those mods add so much it's like having another game for free.
The building options you have for Starbound are much greater than terraria. Literally hundreds of block types foreground and background, dozens of liquids, functioning electronics with wiring and switches. Even drains and pumps for liquids. You can make a waterfall with water, fuel, lava, whatever... Different vehicles for terrestrial use, space use, deep sea, etc..
You can quite literally build the entire planet or planets should you choose to. Build massive cities on the ground, under the ground, underwater, in the sky, and get residents to show up as a colony that pay you rent.
Various side activities like capturing pets, raising animals, growing crops, fishing, cooking, bug collecting, archaeology, bounty hunting, video games inside the game (there are several), Weapon/armor/enemy statue collections.
One of the greatest soundtracks ever, there are 6 and 10 hour versions on youtube that I play while driving or cleaning the house.
Overall an awesome game, forget the negative reviews about the company. You can easily get hundreds to thousands of hours out of this game if you so choose.
What it is - a 2d side scrolling action rpg with full construction/destruction of environments and materials, some survival aspects (optional), with billions of planets to visit (i dont know the actual number but it's massive). It's a 2d No Mans Sky except Starbound has a better story telling imo, especially with mods.
