Fixed ALL my lag issues!!!!!
Just tried it out with the following steps:

Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Starbound\win32\launcher
Right click on launcher.exe, go to properties.
Click Compatibility tab
Uncheck everything here, and then place a check next to 'Run this program as an administrator'.
Click okay, then run the game through Steam. You'll get the admin prompt, but it'll run MUCH smoother.

Disabled Steam overlay as well for good measure. Game went from completely unplayable at 10 FPS to running smooth as butter, hope this is a thread you were looking for.

Unfortunately, both the launcher.exe as well as the Starbound.exe files are already set to run as administrator and do not have any compatibility set on them and the game still chugs at 9 frames per second or less depending on where I am in the game.

If I'm in the human prison, or the Glitch castle the game runs at 9 fps or less, if I'm just out exploring the surface of the planet (even if there is 5 or 10 enemies on the screen with me) the game is fine and runs somewhere between 30 and 50 fps.

Game was fine for my computer prior to this "last wipe" update that occured a couple days ago, was always smooth even in the prison, but after the last update it's been horrible when there are a lot of blocks, objects and NPC's like in the prison and Glitch castle.

Hopefully they'll be able to fix it and return it to getting decent to good performance like I was getting prior to the most recent update.

I am playing on a quad core i5 2500k 3.7GHz with a GTX460 and it still lags on several locations. Specially when there are too many lights like in the Glitch Castles.

Well for me this game didnt run at all. I can at least play it now and face issues farther along. 10 fps in the opening ship was just ridiculous, nevermind going down to the first planet and doing the tutorial. Granted Im playing this game on an older laptop, 4 years old, but this same laptop just burned thru Tombraider in 1600 x 900 flawlessly.

game is a 2d pixel game that should run on a sega genesis but due to the devs need for flare they added modern shader effects and lighting like the flashlight.

Without the ability to toggle these un optimized options some of us just have no hope for a smooth game until they fix it with a toggle or better code.

Had same issue. First i disabled Vsync in the starbound config, still didnt work, then i went to Nvidia settings and forced vsync on from there, since then i seem to have had no more issues.

This thread has been raised from the dead three times...now I finally understand. The only people who play Starbound are necromancers. Or Christians who believe this thread is now Jesus. My eyes are opened!

Unfortunately, Starbound is hideously unoptimized, and at this point, this never really will be fixed since Chucklefish has basically straight up said they are abandoning updating the game to work on the console versions. You can really only do so much to make the game run better. And if you have built up a massive base with a lot of NPCs you're going to lag even on a NASA level computer. But yeah, holy crap this thread has been necroed enough.

Recently I have had person with fps problem in other game, we couldn't resolve it in any way, until randomly we noticed that his card uses only 1x PCI...

It happened that his graphic card wasn't properly injected, after he pushed it, all problems were fixed. (previously he didn't have any issues, it seems that something caused graphic card to move a little)

Maybe try this ^?
Some games also have problems with antiviruses constantly scanning their saving progress (if game saves often then it creates serious fps problems), maybe disable antivirus for short test and see what happens?
