lava lake = insta death
I don't have words for how angry I am right now.

For twenty hours of game time I have slowly been exploring this damn planet. I've gathered tons of stuff, but I can't find half the stuff I need. I'm getting more and more iritated by this fact, so I'm starting to take chances that I wouldn't have taken ten hours ago. So, yeah, I was jumping through areas that I probably shouldn't have been. And yes, I probably should have gone back to base camp more often to drop stuff off. And yes, jumping around while near lava probably isn't a good idea.

But then, I've been doing it for hours and hours because I can't find the portal thing, and I can't find any ores beyond gold, copper, silver, and iron.

So, I couldn't see the glow of lava below me, so I figured it would only a ten square drop, just like the previous 9000 times. But no, it was a long drop into a lake fire, and unlike everything else previous, was insta death. And with all my crap on me. So even when I immediately logged out, praying that somehow the game didn't save the moment my tender skin touched hell incarnate, of course I lost nearly everything.

Lovely. Nice game design. Really tempted not to play again as I just wasted five or ten hours... Ugh.

Love the game otherwise by the way. Great job devs. But could you throw me a bone here? Christ. No clue what's coming, and insta death on the other side.

tl;dr when you start seeing lava, know that dropping to the assumed platform below you will will result in a one way ticket south of heaven...

the portal thing is on the surface of the planet.

the core fragments you need are in the mine or near the planet's core.

yes there is limited ore types on the "starter" planets.

how you spent 20 hours on your first planet boggles my mind! i thought i was a slow takes-everything-in explorer type... but you are clearly that title holder!

btw. i've insta-died in deep lava before on survival when i was being careless. and yes it did kinda suck. so. sorry it happened to you.

im amazed! you never found the portal?! it was probably left of where you spawned on the surface,

also, left ctrl lets you move the camera around, you can look down with that.

its just part of the game, it happens, and planets will say what they have on them, some dont have certain things

yea losing all your stuff sucks. Survival mode's biggest challenge is reminding yourself to put your valuables somewhere safe and keeping track of your underground paths in case you happen to get yourself killed. Falling into the lava lakes are especially bad because I think all your stuff either gets roasted or just falls off the map. Honestly, though, it sounds like you got frustrated and careless - we've all been there.

Whenever I take a big loss like this in any game, I facepalm, logout (ragequit), and put the game down until I forget about my losses. The good news is that everything you lost can be reacquired again. I guarantee that after an hour or so of playing you'll have completely forgotten about the great lava dive of 2016.

If you really care that much, go into your starbound folder, open storage, delete the latest playersave file and remove the .bak1 file extension from one of the backup files to make that the new playersave. That will load an earlier character save, so you'll have something at the very least.

Glorious.

On my side, when I die, I get :jarate: a lot, respawn as quick as possible and rush to look for my items in case I forget about them. I think it's better for you/me to look for your items when your death location is engraved in your mind and soul. When the scare is fresh. xD
Since the bandages drop on death, I usually just don't care if I die midway and try over and over to get to my items until I get a clear way without dying because of monsters.

Also, you can get your items back by covering the lava with blocks and making yourself a path toward your items. Just don't step into the black zone under the lava because it will kill you and at this point, I don't know where your items will be thrown out.

Very frustration
Much angry
Wow

You've been mindless, it happens to everyone.
You feel like the game betrayed you but you betrayed yourself by not being careful enough.
:repoop: happens, get over it, take it as a new quest!

Main Quest : Getting my stuff back.

i dont think lava destroys items in this game, like it does in Minecraft and other games.

if you can find your items (and have not upgraded the MM to harvest liquids) you can dig under the lava and drain it out and recover your items. make a wooden-platform-staircase down to them, if that drop cant be avoided.

also, items do not decay when you drop them on death (tiles, like dirt, will despawn after a while if you never pick them up)

good luck!

or... you could just install a mod where you don't drop your items when you die... I know I did... in a game like this I just want to have fun and not worry about losing my ♥♥♥♥ because I didn't execute a jump correctly...

dont' forget you can use /admin to dive in the lava to get your stuff back. Also, try using rope or dirt-block stairs for longer decents.

Even without lava it might have caused your death (though item retrieval would be way easier that way). Always be vary when it comes to great depths. If you can't see the ground with your normal light (Flashlight, Light Enhancement etc.), throw a Flare. If you can't even see the flares glow you should be carefull. And even if you see that when you move or look a bit further down, double check its really your flare and not something you really don't wanna jump into. Hope you continue playing and take it as a (hard) lessons learned.
