Or I just don't actually hate a thing I've never seen/tried.
I've learned that there will be furry haters and also furry lovers wherever you go. Furry hating is mainstream, though. If you're into it play with one or more people you know aren't haters.
As for me, I've tried them out but the fact that avali don't work with any non-avali clothes sours it for me a bit.
Their concept seems strange to me. Claims they are "furry raptors" yet...well first raptors aren't furry and second I don't really see any raptor characteristics anyways.
I will say they have noticeable effort put into their lore and design. There's a ton of just mediocre to awful race mods out there that are far worse in comparison. Like that MLP mod...
Anyway,I don't really like furries lol
Furries are just an overrated and overused concept, but avalis changes that a bit lol
Another part is jealousy, as whatever race-mod they actually like/develop isn't getting the same level of attention.
A third part is that the Avali have racially-locked crafting.
Mostly this is just for crafting their "flag" and the all-important Nano-Lathe, Nano-Loom, and Weapon-Bench.
But, their food is allso racial locked. Non-Avali can't even eat the base-level crop, and the recipes for the more advanced ones require being an Avali.
(Once you actually have those first two crafting tables, you can then make basically everything you'd ever need for an Avali-themed structure. Naturally, finding them is a pain if you didn't pick an Avali to play as, because they're the rare-er buildings of the allready rare Avali village, and that is pretty obviously rage-inducing if you get two or more "unlucky" villages in a row)
The Fourth "hate inducer" is related to another mod, Frakin' Races, as via it's changes, the Avali take no fall damage. Ever. By comparison to the other races, it is probably the most overpowered ability present. (mostly jealousy again, and I feel it often when playing my Floran in an otherwise Avali group.)
(on the other hand, I get regen so long as I have a light, and I never go without a Light-1 or better augment for my EPP, so I'm healing constantly, and that makes them jealous)
A Fifth is the fact that the Avali didn't lose out on all their racial weapons, basically entirely because they're a mod-race. (seriously, look for the older screenshots, see all those racial-looking guns? I'm thinking of the very clearly Avian rifles. Gone, unless they came from a mod-race) (this comes back to the "jealousy" part, and fairly obviously at that)
And then there's the final fact: The Avali pre-date Starbound. They were adapted to it by their creator, RyuujinZero, and some of his "lore" outright contradicts what is possible in-game.
(this is perfectly understandable, but it still generates some hatred from those who just don't grok how little Starbound can do with some things)
Best example: they are supposed to breathe an ammonia-based atmosphere. (starbound cannot handle that sort of thing, at all.)
Second-best example: regular water is, to them, like LAVA is to us. Not safe for swimming in. (this one straight-up invalidates any world that has rain, and would prevent them from ever doing the Hylotl Mission)
Third-best example: the previous two are "because they're from an iceball world" Effectively, they evolved on Ultra Hoth.
Personally? I find them amusing, and I really like the Blocks and Furniture that come with the mod, but overall they were/are kinda a bad race to even try and adapt to Starbound.
Actually...

For some reason a lot of people act all obsessed over the Avali, seemingly treating at as if it's part of the official game. For example, you seemingly can't browse most fanart for the game without finding Avali art. It isn't really Starbound fanart due to the fact it isn't actually in the game or made by Chucklefish, but a lot of people treat it as such.
