Where to go before the Gaping Dragon in the Depths?
I have completed the game like a year ago on console and even though I am back in shape combat wise I am simply not strong enough to kill the Dragon.
Can anybody suggest a place to level and get a good enough weapon to kill it?

Well, It depends, which bosses have you already killed? Do you have the drake sword? I'm going to guess that you probably have found the first bell.

First bell down. I don't have the Drake sword though

You might want to try to find the sword, I recall you can obtain it by shooting the Drake's tail underneath the bridge. There are also certain Youtube guides that give locations of armor and weapons that can be obtained early on, with some effort though. You can also search for the great scythe in the catacombs. The Claymore is also a pretty good, balanced weapon.

Well here's the thing.

I got the elite knight set.
I got the Claymore.
But the dmg is not nearly high enough. I think I might go for the drake sword for the damage it gives.

Everything works, usually reinforced to +5 or higher. The only problem with this boss is his healthbar - stay calm, don't rush and take your chances. His attack pattern is simple.

If you want to level/upgrade, the basilisks give good souls and are easy to kill. Just be sure not to get cursed, because that will cost you either 6000 or 3000 from Oswald.

The biggest mistake is trying to stay close to him.

1. Get the bonfire in the Depths.
2. Don't use a shield, go 2handed all the time.
3. Kill the channeler, makes the fight much easier.
4. Strategy: keep your distance until he uses his run attack. When he's finished with it stab him in the back for a full combo. Then run back at a safe distance.
5. When you're comfortable you can evade his attacks use gold pine resin to finish him quicker. Domhnall has 3 of them you can buy.

You should have the large ember which you find in the depths. Giving this to Andre will allow you to use large titanite shards to upgrade your weapon to +10. The Gaping Dragon is one of the easiest bosses, as he is big and slow with predictable attack patterns and leaves good sized windows for you to attack. The one where he puts his head into the ground and charges is a great time to get a few strikes in. Switch to 2 handing here. You can also cut off his tail at this point and that will remove his tail swipes (unless you are directly behind him) which can be anoying if you don't do so. This boss can be a fairly slow fight as he has a very large health bar but if you are patient and prepared for a long fight then you shouldn't have too much difficulty.

Good luck!
