Hammer Editor Crash on loading a map!
Hello All,
Recently after taking a short break from map development in the SDK environment, I came back to find my map that has 5+ hours of work put in to and is about 1/3 made, crash upon starting Hammer. At 33% of the "post-loading" stage of loading hammer closes.

No error message, only a dump file created in the directory, named: "Hammer_<numbers>_<numbers>_accessviolation.mdmp"

Inside this dumpfile is the line "The Thread tried to read or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access"

I have set up Hammer using "SourceMultiTool" due to its ease of use in the past, but now this problem has occured, I have reinstalled Hammer, validated it, along with hl2, ep2, css and ep 1. None of which have worked.

I am using a customConfig to make maps, that use the cstrike,ep2,hl2,gmod and sdk fdg's, however the crashing persists.
Please help!

Sometimes hammer crashed.
If you then reopen the map, autosaved at the moment hammer crashed, it will crash again.
Maybe that's the case for you, idk for sure.
Check if you have an older version of the map saved anywhere else and also
  • Never overwrite saves with autosaves (give them a different name)
  • Always spam ctrl+s
  • Maybe sometimes save your map (named for example de_dust3) with a different name (de_dust3_v2, de_dust3_v2 ...) so that if one file becomes corrupted you always have a backup
But sadly I don't know how to fix a corrupted map file :c

Thank you a heap for the reply, but unfortunately, It is happening with another map now as well. One that I finished and know for certain is not corrupt. Also I will take up the practice of naming maps differently now, thanks.

Are you using invalid characters at all in either the naming of the map or in the naming of entities? For example you can not use quotation marks.

Not that I remember no.
