I really don't think you have the needs of both sides in mind. What do the elves want? A home and safety. What do the humans do? Treat them like slaves, put them in a crappy non-humans part of town, make fun of them, rape [forced sex] em more than any other races.
The whole hostage thing is such a human thing, that if humans were in the same position, they would have done it too. When people get backed into a corner, they will kick and scream till the last man.
But yes, there's racists on all sides. I wouldn't support the squirrels, but I would help the non-humans find their own place to call home. The game only lets me side with the squirrel ruffians, sadly.
Also, a quote from the elf boss lady Toruviel: "Help us flee under the cover of night. We have no wish to fight. With luck, no one will be harmed" Meanwhile, White Rayla from the order is on the shore saying KILL ALL NON-HUMANS GRRRR.
Vizima was already on fire when the Order moved into Murky Waters. Yaevinn had been planning the rebellion for a long while, something Toruviel would have been well aware of. White Rayla was demoted by Siegfried right before the assault and she played no part in the hostage situation, whatever she might have been saying prior. This doesn't remove the fact that the Squirrels were a guerrilla unit that refused to disarm, and the Order were operating within the law by putting down said insurrection, whatever ulterior motives the Order had for doing so. If it wasn't the Order that put them down, it would have been the Temerian army eventually.
All of this would have been prevented if Toruviel would have swallowed her pride, disarmed her unit and integrated with the humans of Murky Warters when they first offered to help freely. Pride goeth before the fall.
It is really interesting how the story and history make it so hard to decide, just like how it would be in real life to some I suppose. Everyone is different in the real world, so then their choice in the game will also be different than the next person. And with those choices, always come consequences.
The Squirels are a sort of extremist group to me, much more evil and vile than the Order, even though both are racist pricks.
If the Squirels went about their cause in a way that wasn't hating humans and their affiliates, basically denying water in the desert, I would side with them over the Order, but acting like a terrorist group gives them a negative connotation in my mind.
The Order is far from good and just however, human-centric and rather racist to the minorities. I dislike them almost equally to the Squirels.
This all being said, it hardly matters. When a group has to utilize innocent parties to hide behind their motives, the line has been drawn. That group is officially a terrorist corroborate, and deserves death.
(Also, being racist to the guy who's not really even human is kind of a ♥♥♥♥ move.)
EDIT: Sided with the Knights for Alvin, eliminated the threat to the innocent, felt like ♥♥♥♥ as everyone and their ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mother condemned me for slaying non-humans the rest of the game.)
But the game makes it so hard to stay neutral. I think CDPR was a group of geniuses back when this game's story was created, as well as now, and we have come a long way with Geralt since then for sure.
EDIT..That and the original author of the stories. Wanted to give him credit, too.
I do take the neutral route of "they also make mistakes" but when you have to take a side at the bank.... elves.
