If you're wondering what controllers to consider, I use an Xbone controller and it works very nicely. Using that or a 360 pad is often better as the button prompts in games change to natively support them. If you prefer Dual-shock, you can get them to work, too. Logitech have some good controllers if you want to get away from all that.
Racing games naturally play best with a proper racing wheel and pedals, strategy, FPS, RPG's naturally play best with mouse and keyboard, 2D fighters play best on arcade joysticks and flight sims on flight sticks. Controllers on the other hand are pretty versatile, they're best for platformers (both 2 and 3D) third person action games (without shooting) and 3D beat-em-up's, which is what the Batman: Arkham-series essentially is.
Played Asylum with a PS3 controller, City with an XBox 360 pad connected to my PC and I'm going to play Knight with the same Xbox 360 controller.
I haven't tried KB&M myself, but I saw someone else try it, and at least form my point of view, it sucked.
I mean seriously, left mouse for strike? Come on. Left mouse should be quick-fire batarang, with right mouse allowing you to aim (imo)!
I just prefer the X button to strike in a game like this. It's like Dead Rising 2, although it fits better there, as left mouse is attack with right mouse being throw.
The point is - with that game, there is no counter (not that it's needed) just one button for attacking and one button to aim for a throw. You have exceptions, of course (like using a gun, driving a vehicle, etc).
What was the button to counter in Arkham Asylum/City? I forgot. I'm always stumbling over right mouse being cape and right mouse being counter.
Although, I like to game everything and I've played through the Batman games on every system I could. I use a 360 controller for them all, playstation included ( I have a great device which lets me use my 360 controller on my xb1, ps3 and ps4 :D ).
I tried both options and I prefer controller by far.
