For the longest time my favorite Batman stories were The Killing Joke and Death in the Family.
No matter what transpired in the monthly comics, how the story went... I had very little interest outside the occasional rare story arc.
The Nightfall series was great, as is The Long Halloween.
But other stories like Venom and Noel, have their moments... but fail to really live up IMO.
I will say, while getting even further off topic, I loved Snyder's New 52 Batman run. From the Court of Owls through Death of the Family, and into the Secret City/Year Zero stuff.
I'm not huge on the new Gordon/Robo-Batman thing... but I'm still going to see where it goes.
But, even with some things in Arkham Asylum not fitting properly, it doesn't mean they aren't part of the universe. Just like with the comics, things change and when you look back... it doesn't really "fit", but it's still there.
As is, Arkham Origins takes place in the second year of Bruce's journey as Batman. Nine years before the events of Arkham Asylum.
We're supposed to believe in those nine years he took in ♥♥♥♥ Grayson, raised him... trained him. Made him Robin and allowed him to leave to become Nightwing.
Took in Jason Todd, trained him... lost him. Then took in Tim Drake and Barbara Gordon. Made Tim Robin, Barbara Batgril.. who then got shot and became Orcale. ;) In nine years.
18 months between Asylum and City, and then Knight takes place nine months after the end of City.
There's already an small suspension of disbelief to the series. Rocksteady stated that Origins is canon, and made the events of the game so by including them in Arkham Knight.
So, we are intended to take in the fact that Bruce took in three Robins and Batgirl in the nine years between Origins and Asylum.
But, it's also a matter of making the character of Bruce more believable. If we took what he experiences in the comics and that timeline of events, he'd be well over a 100, Alfred long since dead.
And yet we're supposed to take it that he's in his mid to late 40s. ;)
