How well does it use cores?

im wondering how well it does it because its quite old and games from that era arent known for being well optimized for many cores

the last time I played SINS made me quit because in the late game it was a slide show ^^

It doesn't support multiple cores at all.

The game engine was written for one core and it was decided it would be too much effort to re-write the engine to support more. So the only multi-core usage it will get is the built in stuff from the operating system, which is minor.

Though on modern CPUs with decent single core speed plus mods like E4X that do things like reduce the maximum number of proximity mines I don't have it slow down that bad.

I do stick to maps with less than 100 stars, but I also like to start with 8 players.

Technically, it uses multiple cores for texture loading and audio but the primary game logic is single core.

awww man thats a shame, i love this game and i was hoping my new i9 12900k would absolutely demolish it and allow me to play a massive game with tons of ai but its as you say and only hitting like 2 cores at 100% which doesnt give very good performance in late game :( im hoping some day we get to see sins of a solar empire 2 :D

Just to say, even if its only running on a single core you should still see quite a difference over an older cpu as single core performance generally improves with each generation of cpu.

So for instance this running on your 12900k will perform much faster than say a 3770k. even if they are both running 1 core. (l personally have seen a massive jump from an 8350 to a ryzen 3600).

So maybe the slow down wont be as bad as you think.
