All started when my harddrive which had steam on it broke but I have a new harddrive and a fresh install of steam. only thing is ck2 is on another drive
On start of the game launcher the game creates a folder with files in your PC's documents folder. If your game does not start the launcher then it is possible that the documents folder is not being created. If your game crashes while loading the game could have a problem reading/writing to the documents folder.
Your game's documents folder is found here ""..\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\"
Check to make sure that there is a "log" folder in the "Crusader Kings II" folder and that in the "log" folder are .log files.
Check to make sure there is a settings.txt file in your "Crusader Kings II" folder
If any of the above are missing, then make sure the game can read/write to the documents folder by doing the following:
Add steam.exe and Crusader Kings II.exe to the Exceptions list of your antivirus app. (Especially if you have Bitdefender)
Ensure Steam.exe and Crusader Kings II.exe have admin rights in their properties -> compatibility tab (Right click exe to go to properties)
Go into Windows Defender Security Center -> Virus & Threat Protection -> Virus & Threat Protection settings. Allow the steam and game.exe files through via "Allow an app through controlled folder access"
Once this is done try running the game. If the above doesn't work and your documents game folder is still missing then try the following:
Use Notepad to make a new text file called userdir.txt in the Steam Crusader Kings II folder whereCrusader Kings II .exe is.
In that file place a single dot, save and exit.
This tells the game to write the user files right there instead of under Documents. If that works and the game now runs, you can replace that dot with any file path you like.
This is wat fixed the problem for me but if anybody still has troubles pm me cause I have a few other fixes
