Before you buy read this THIS IS NOT TOMB RAIDER
This is a cross between Far Cry 3, search the island and hunt animals for upgrades, Batman Arkham Asylum, hit the Q button to see hidden objects and useable items, and a FPS, take your pick. The tombs are simple puzzles that a third grader could figure out and the game is way too short Approx: 16-20 hours if you want all the items. I LOVED TOMB TOMB RAIDER and all the games!

When you get beyond all the GREAT graphics, sounds, and story, you have a VERY WEAK game that has very little to do with the ACTUAL TOMB RAIDER games!

Hands down one of the bast games in years. I was amazed at every turn of the game. The new darker setting was a great choice IMO. There is a reason the new Batmans movies are so well loved. Why the Empire Strikes Back, and The Temple of Doom are considered the best in thier respective franchises. Darker settings which make the happy endings that much more meaningful.

But yeah, more puzzles would not be bad for future installments.

I already made my point in another thread but let's say it again:

I've been a big fan of Tomb Raider 1, 2 and 3

First let's face it this new Tomb Raider 2013 is a great game that was able to completely overstep the flaws of the previous tomb raider games (which clearly lacked dynamism, emotional immersion, and maniability).

A great game, but no yet perfect as there are a few things that I miss from the previous games: exploration, tombs and temples, complex enigmas, and archaic booby-traps, all integrated INTO THE MAIN STORY LINE (rather than as secondary quests that are completed within minutes and completely lacking any scenaristic interest)

-exploration: at no point of the main quest I really had to look around wandering "where should I go" or ""how can I get there?". I was not "lost in the wild".

-tombs and temples: the main story line doesn't really get you enough into mysterious tombs and temples , you mostly visit bunkers and old wooden villages. The places visited didn't feel archeological enough I think (and the fact that temples have been turned into garbage dumps or outhouses doesn't help archeological immersion neither).
I mean this is TOMB-raider so archeological atmosphere is essential.

-complex enigmas: the mechanisms were too showy (I mean a metallic or wooden mechanism placed in evidence in the middle of an empty room made of stone, that's way too obvious!).
Moreover the logic to solve puzzles was too easy and didn't require any thinking. While I can remember some serious logical enigmas from the previous games (not only that was fun to think out the solution, but also scenaristically that was adding some greatness to some ancient civilisation).

-archaic booby-traps: here's what I miss the most, in the game you go through many potentially deadly incidents occuring, but not any deadly archaic mechanisms. I miss the moving ceilings with spikes, rolling rock boules in narrow corridors, the deadly floors, the shifting sands rooms, etc. That was adding some archeological drama...and fear!

-at last, the game is too short (especially once you take the boring secondary quests out of the equation)

Other than that, I have some minor finicky cristicisms:
*secondary characters are quite transparent, this isn't big deal unless you want to succitate a little bit of emotion when one gets killed.
*The game already has a lot of epic moments, but maybe I would have enjoyed some more impressive boss fight (Trex-like I mean)
*Quick-time actions are a bit confused which kind of break the action flow (because you don't really know what key you have to press so you have to start it over until you find the right key to press).
*scenaristic coherence: this game is a fiction with a fairytale storyline, so of course it's not realistic, still a little bit of realism helps in making a fairy tale more believable.
For instance: you might expect to find lots of bones from past battles and sacrifices, but thousands of fresh cadavers is a bit too much over-the-top, I mean whose are these, is that a lost island or a metropolis?

To sum-up, if I'm being critical here that is not for free, that is positive criticism. It's just that I had a lot of fun with this game, and I think the sequel (I guess there will be one) would only need few improvements to approach "raider" perfection.

Good one, but i think you over-defending this game and keeping your criticism way more silent and modest than i really should be.
How about the fact that TR 2013 levels totally linear S shaped "serpentines" with no backtracking value (look for documents on roofs of antient building you cant even enter, or shooting 5 lanters in are - that SO FUN *sarcasm so there is no real reason to revisit area and story would not allow you to do so) where you need just run forward?

How about invisible walls on every cliff to prevent you from falling? Seriosly invisible walls to prevent falling IN TOMB RAIDER GAME???? How that means a good game or good tomb raider and how so many people missed that they cant even die from falling in this game??? There is no fear of death of miscalculated jump, there is almost no jumps!
Oh its not all, even at some places where you can jump a little - height means nothing, if you fall on lower platform where you should die in any previous TR game, here lara would not even a have a scratch, or if she will, health regen will patch it in seconds! THATS INSTANT FAIL OF GAME DESIGN!

How about the fact that most time of what you do in game is not exploring or adventuring, but shooting people from covers?

How about fact that new Tomb Raider 2013 screwed up even in being good cover-shooter, because there is no cover button, no universal covers, and lara can autocover only at very few very scripted points and if you will go away from that scripted cover or will be spotted, you will not be able to return to cover and lara will just stand up and catch bullets and arrows?

How about that fact that she cant even shoot while running and need to shoot only in AIM mode which makes walking very slow and basicly standing still at same position for a shot, which turns Tomb Raider 2013 in totally crappy shooter as Resident Evil 4 and 5 was (because you need to stand still to shoot!) ?

How about the fact that Tomb Raider 2013 story and gameplay dont have connection to each other and about fact that emotional and story wise game totally unbelievable and feels just a cheap Lindolefed mess (this terms means LOST and PROMETHEUS or any other crappy meaningless script written by Lindelof)? Lara acts like innocent girl in cut-scenes at 1st half of game, says sorry and cry about deer she kills, but 20 minutes later she kills dozens of people in burning willage like a pro assassin agent 47 or Altair, without saying a word or shaking, but then again in cut-scene she acts like non of this happened and like she never killed anyone and was not so bad ass just a minute ago, and then ago she shoot everybody like RAMBO (not sure if COD generation knows who he is), and then again in cut-scenes she is so innocent and stupid so Stanislavksy (google for this name to understand what i mean) would not believe in this crappy story, poor writing and poor acting for a second!

How about the fact that story and gameplay (just like in LOST) gives no ♥♥♥♥ about what happened just 5 - 10 minutes ago and shows no obvious consequences that should happen and just shows nonsence scenes to intrigue you for a next 5 minutes untill writers and game designers will completely forgot about this scene and will show you new one that does not mix will to previous one or contradicts it and just plain stupidity it shows every 5 minutes (just like Prometheus did)?
For example, at very begining of game lara falls and her belly damaged by metal rusty shiv, she bleeding and obviosly should have infection, not only because this shiv rusty, but because there are rotten corpses everywhere and lara goes almost completely underwater (which also should boost bleeding).
If you have some bits of logic, you would expect that right after cave, 1st thing lara should do is find a doctor, and be a doctor to herself, find some bandages, anticeptics, needles, herbs, painkilles and something to patch herself up, stop bleeding, prevent infection... and next thing she should do rest near fire like a half of day, and then go hunting. But lara does none of above, because developers (game and narrative designers) dont even remember about importance of things like this to make believalbe story, or just lost their last bits of logic.
Well, at least lara remember that she need to eat... just one single time in game! Jesus, why she even bother to do it once if she would forget about eating for a rest of game? You see? Game i totally inconsistent, and have events that barely connected to each other and everything lara does one minute, forgotten in another like it neven happened.
But what even more worse and stupid - devs cant remember that lara would die of infection and bleeding and need to patch hersefl, but they do remember that captain can die, so they give lara task to collect bandages and meds for captain to prevent him from dying of bleedin and infection! WTF was that? Why dont you give task for lara to find meds for herself, but give tasks to find meds for others? So stupid double standards and inconsistency! Why bother wounding her and speaking about her hunger if this will be forgotten 5 minutes later?
Things like that happens till the end of game. I don want to list you every stupid moment like, because it will take long time and will take few pages, but they happen like every 5 minutes.
For example right after deer killing scene, next thing lara does - gets trapped in a bear trap. And what we see there? Blood, lara barely standing! Seem like her leg broken and bleeding. Arch guy helps her to go to camp and reach fire... obviosly in real world she would not walk after this, ok its a game i can accept some simplification of this if its rational enough, so i expect to see how she patch her leg (MGS 3 way for example), rest a little bit or explains that her leg was not broken because of heavy boots that saved her... but no, non of this happens in game, right after cutscene Lara runs and jumps like a Mario! Wtf again? Stupidity or carelesness of writers and game designers!
Yet another aspect - to those who belive TR 2013 have good emotinational story with good characters etc. This is all bullcrap! To make believable story you need to make believable events (i think about i illustrated how "believable" events are in this game, even ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Prometheus events, including Shaw jumping with cut belly was more "believable"... or they was just as unbelievalbe as new TR.) and characters and you need to make them act like humans react in real world. How would real humans react if they would see some friend wounded? They would ask how friends feel, how this happened, should help and so one. How would person react if something awfull happened to him\her? It would like to confess to someone, share emotions, seek for feedback and help.
What characters in TR 2013 think about Lara? Nothing, they dont give a fcuk about any of Lara's wounds or where has she been and what she did, tipical meet of Lara sounds like "oh lara, its you. Good, lets go do some crap" in best case it would be "are you ok?". Nobody asks about blood on her body, about her wound about med help she might need, about psychological trauma she might have, no, they are totally interested in other things and acts like dull dummies, not like believable characters. And what about lara? Did she cry someone about deer and over 9000 people she just killed or shive that stuck in her belly? Did she ever shared her amotions or asked questions about cave where game started, about why so many dead people around about who did it? Did she cried about how terrible it is, how much she want to go home to her mommy? No, no and no! So i dont buy that crap about "emotional deep story about origin of lara and her enstablishment", because in fails in every word - emotions are fake, no deepness at all, looks like her origin of being a professional soulless killer was enstablished long before events of this game happened and she probably have terminal case of periodical amnesia that makes her believe she is innocent amateur and not a proffesional gangbanger she prove she is since begining of game. Damn it, they even failed to enstablish her passion for archeology and tomb raiding, because they made tombs totally unrelated to story, they just optional caves, and because she gives no damn crack about archeology for entire game (after good cave intro, after which game really falled appart and was ruined), she actually an archeologist before this game even started. Thats not what we expected and what they adertised.
Most of people including me expected that Lara would stuck on island without any passion or knowledge to archeology, and that main story would drive her from one cave or antient ruins to another, to find some antient magit artifact that would help everyone to get of the magic island (yeah something like big cork, LOST like, but more interesting lol) that dont let anyone to get of it with its magic power, and by discovering antient history just with goal to leave this island, Lara would slowly fall in love into caves, ruins, history and magic artefacts, so in the end, from survival who wants to left the island, she would turn to explorer who wants to know all the misteries of island - thats how my rational mind sees the ORIGIN OF LARA CROFT, and thats what new TR 2013 sounded like before release. But unfortunately writers and game designers of TR 2013 probably not that rational, as they see ORIGIN of LARA in shooting over 9000 people and puting lara in game with already enstablished love to archeology and deadly skills in killing people, and by completely removing almos any tomb raiding from main story and turning it into cheap cninesse copy of Resident Evil 4 mixed with worst of LOST and Prometheus (jumping with cut belly is a new trend, lol) moments.

So, after this, you still call this game a good one and can give anything more than 5 of 10 or say you enjoyed it?

And that 5 of 10 she deserves purely for artistic, sound\music job and programming of graphics. Not like broken mess of gameplay and story, visual and audio aspects of game really fantastic, if this would be a picture for a wall or 5 minutes long music video i would give it 10 of 10, buts its a game (or should i call it interactive movie?) and it fails to deliver a good game or movie expirience.
Well, maybe if you fan o Bay's stupid Transformers or Lindelofed Prometheus and effects and boom scenes replacing pathetic story, maybe TR 2013 is a good movie for you, but this will indicate lack of logic and taste, because man that have some logic and taste would not fall in love to Transformers of Bay, Prometheus or Tomb Raider 2013 as a movie, as they all pathetic, stupid and unbelievable and causing uncomfortable feeling of endless cognitive dissonance (aka WTF IS THIS STUPID ♥♥♥♥? feeling about every scene).

I dont want to see sequel of this Reboot, because its fundamentely ruined, and anything built above these ruins of TR 2013 would be ruined as well. So i want to see reboot of reboot that will reboot this crappy reboot an will put lara croft back to right direction, which we had in previous reboot (legend, anniversary, underworld) but with more innovative and realistic hardcore gameplay features and more believable archeological story. And i dont want to see any sequel or reboot of Tomb Raider in next 5 years, because i want these 5 years to be spent on building good well polished game, not that rushed mess we have now for TR 2013.
And yeah, reboot does not mean you have to take away everything people loved and make smething totally different - just look at DMC reboot, they did it right, it has everything we loved before about this game, but in same time some refreshed story, style and new features in gameplay (without removal of old!!!), also TR Legend trilogy and mostly Anniversary was another example of good reboot. TR 2013 is bad reboot, because its not Tomb Raider at all, and if you remove Tomb Raider title from 2013 it will be broken mess of bad game design and poor writting and quite a mediocre and totally dumb game with good graphics nobody would even bother to buy. Byte me, but Tomb Raider 2013 was probably a Reboot of Resident Evil 4, still bad, but at least it similar to RE4 ;-)

It was incredably hard to read your post, however I do agree with you. Infact one thing I do remember that annoyed the living f*ck out of me. Lara saying "I hate Tombs" ..... WHAT THE HELL !?
I'm not saying that's my view. I'm saying that's the way the number crunchers see it. I love the old Tomb Raider games, and I agree that Legend and Underworld were also pretty darned good. But the vast majority of gamers either don't agree, or weren't interested enough in the series anymore for it to be financially successful. All I'm saying is that this new iteration of the series has it's own merits, and I actually think they made the right choice with it. It's not better than the old Tomb Raider, it's just different. And sometimes different can be good.

its tomb raider and lara croft and its a reboot so get over yourselves

I love this kind of short-sighted behavour. So, a re-boot is "take everything out that you knew about and restart it how you want"

I don't get why so many people buy into this crap. It's a game, using the name of a character and the title of a previously-known franchiise and riding on the coat-tails of it's success. There is very little to almost-nothing "Tomb Raider" about this. It's a money-making scheme, Hell, before release of the game Crystal dynamics have already commented on making a movie. This is Tomb raider: Cash cow.

We've all played the game and we all like different things about it. My argument is that it isn't what they advertise it as and it never will be with this direction. I bet the DLC's will be another 10 min dungeon and 3 Multiplayer-centric addons.

That's how batman did it. Bane's origin story was rewritten, Joker's origin story was completely abandoned, Bane's use of hyper steroids was abandoned, Raas is no longer literally immortal, Batman's character was largely redone, Batman actually stopped being Batman, unlike every comic ever.

A reboot allows you way more license than you people are realizing. You get to distill content to its most basic parts and rewrite everything else. And that's all just part of being a reboot.

It's called character growth and depth. She hates them because, surprise, every tomb she's been in up to this point has tried to kill her.

But that never stops her from entering them and over the course of the game she never says another thing about it. And:

at the end it's explicitly stated that she plans to explore even more tombs. So obviously her dislike whether still present or not, isn't going to stop her from doing what she needs to do.

If you want a game that does this sort of throwback thing the WRONG way, play DMC: Devil May Cry.

That was probably meant to be a joke.

(Not that in-game Lara was joking, that Crystal Dynamics added that line to raise eyebrows. It is a reboot afterall and fans wouldn't expect it.)

It's called character growth and depth. She hates them because, surprise, every tomb she's been in up to this point has tried to kill her.

But that never stops her from entering them and over the course of the game she never says another thing about it. And:

at the end it's explicitly stated that she plans to explore even more tombs. So obviously her dislike whether still present or not, isn't going to stop her from doing what she needs to do.

If you want a game that does this sort of throwback thing the WRONG way, play DMC: Devil May Cry.

Now try to read my VERY HUGE POST above that you totally missed, where i explained how wrong you are about this statement even before you stated all of this.
Especially read about fake "growth and depth + establishment and origin of lara" which does not exist in this game until you not comletely blind fanboy who imagine things that was never seen in a game.

It still might be a reboot, but some people need to understand, it's a blaintant slap in the face to the fans. It's not Tomb Raide, Lara isn't british, lara isn't an aristocrat, it's not a platformer, it has little to do with tombs... Infact, this is the opposite of what tomb raider was about.

At the risk of being stoned to death, Tomb raider wasn't really about Lara. Lara was a tool to be used, akin to the joypad I was using to control her. -I- was running for my life from buldors. -I- was fighting T-rex's and -I- was getting lost in Tombs that hadn't be trodden in thousands of years. Yet, here we have this game. An interactive movie that revolves around a sniveling little girl who pretends to be something she isn't. British, Posh, intresting or even confident. She was the main focal point of the entire game and I couldn't stand the running Commontary about -everything- I told her to do.

The game had good graphics, sound and amazing Hair ;) but that's where it ended. QTE hell. An interactive movie with generic plot and a female lead that you could've replaced with anyone and would've have notice. Infact she would've been better if she had been replaced.
reboot Origin wanting to make there own version of the character and the voice actress is british so um next and meh to the rest i love platformers but i'm not going to act like a stick in the mud with this new one
Once again, I'm not saying the game is crap. Even if it has a poor storyline covered up with shiney graphics. I'm saying it has nothing to do with Tomb raider. Infact, thinking about it. The -Only- reboot that was any good IMHO was the Battlestar Galactica one.
its tomb raider and it will always be such now kindly stop this nonsesne before i go anymore insane
Well, to be fair. You're the one in a "This isn't Tomb Raider" thread trying to talk to the contrairy. So it is all self-inflicted :P
