Why do Americans say Lara's name wrong?
When I watch Tomb Raider videos on Youtube or even read forum posts here, Americans always call her Laura/Lora or Larra, as in Larry.

Why? Her name is Lara.

You're not wrong, They do pronounce it horribly. Thats still only 2 people out of around 320,000,000 though, Not exactly convincing.

Aslo, The IGN reviewer is from the UK....

This pretty much sums up this entire topic. The video backing up the wild claim isn't even an American speaker, she's British.

The pronunciation of her name as "Laura" happens universally because they are similar names and it has nothing to do with any single country. Not to mention, the US is large and has a lot of different dialects within it. This should be obvious given the size of the UK and how many different dialects there is there.

It's an issue with the name being similar to another, much more popular name. Much like how Ami gets pronounced "Amy" since it's spelled very similar to a much more popular name.

I think we should look at which country gives Tomb Raider the most patronage, and then allow them to say her name the way they want to. Note, this country probably has over 300 million people, and I'm sure plenty of people in this country have "Laura" Croft sex dolls.

No we don't. Especially if they have sex dolls. They should all finally watch "Doctor Zhivago" and learn the name.

While "Lara" is a typical girl's name in Central Europe, it is uncommon in North America. The name that comes closest to it is "Laura", that's why thay say it like that.

America has a long history of pronouncing "a" as "o", or a sort of long "aa" sound, for example, Mario as Morio, Macho as Mocho. I hear it every now and then in Australia too, where some words like Pasta are pronounced "Paarsta" (as in rhyming with faster) by the general public. It might have something to do with most of the affected words being adopted from languages other than English, but then those same differences can find themselves passed on to other words, as is happening here. Just continue to use the correct pronunciation yourself (which, in the case of Lara, is Lah-ruh (as in LARk and grammAR (lol))) and maybe one day they'll catch on.

I have to say never in my life have I heard any American pronounce "Mario" as "Morio" or "Macho" as "Mocho". You must be thinking of a different country.

It's the same reason why Americans still can't pronounce Ryu. They say Ree you or Rye you

In the game, characters of all nationalities pronounce it the same way!

It's one thing to pronounce a name differently but it's a completely different thing altogether to outright completely change a person's name.

Reasons we shall never understand, I fear...

What's even funnier is "fancy-pants" hipsters who pronounce her name as (Lair-ah). This is the height of douche-baggery.

I don't pronounce it wrong, why do british people say Lara's name wrong? I know some british people who never said her name right, don't target it on just americans. I know a mexican girl who says it wrong too.
