Nah, definitely a "buy it on sale" kinda deal.

I just beat the first game and wanted more so I installed this.. and the intro was kind of inspiring and the UI and design of the game gave me hope.. and then I saw ARCADE mode and I kind of knew what I was in for. It seems like a shallow port of the first game on an updated engine. The overall quality of the game is pretty high but it just feels like a casual game where you just go in a shoort around. The missions have you running here and getting this and the running here getting that while enemies pop up in obvious trigger points. I guess someone complained about the controls/action in the first part and Remedy decided to please those casuals with this? I dont mind it but the first game left a kind of open ended conclusion hinting at a possible sequel.. REMEDY GIVE US ALAN WAKE 2!! after Break Point succeeds?

I played this first then the original. The original has more content and I enjoyed it a lot, but most because of the story and the spooky scenario. I don't feel like American Nightmare is a bad game. There's a difference between complicated and clunky controls. Alan Wake was very clunky sometimes, and they fixed it in this game. Of course you could just throw a flare and get away, but if you are like me and likes to waste nothing in survival games you'll try to dodge, and dodge is really bad in the original. It wasn't clunky to frustrate or scare you more, it was clunky because it's a console game, and not made to be played with a keyboard and mouse. It feels better on pc gear in this game. This isn't the factor that introduced an easier game in my opinion. It's easier because it has a lot of ammo, guns, and it's "brighter". Also the enemies are more predictable like someone said. Combat in general is also different, but it was already a little different in the DLCs, I wouldn't place it better or worse, they are just different styles.

American Nightmare was done with far less budget and meant to be a filler, continuing the story ended in the DLCs but without taking too much of the ideas for a possible Alan Wake 2. I liked how they overcame the low budget, offering an arcade mode (I never played but since I just finished the original DLCs I might give it a try after this new playtrough), which would be not fun at all with the original controls, and with the Night Springs loop idea. Night Springs is a normal looking city, but with misterious things happening. It has not the same ambience as Bright Falls, and you could notice that even in the TV shows on the first game. They weren't scary, but rather intriguing and misterious. From my point of view: Alan is already aware where he is and has a plan to maybe save himself. He doesn't go for a horror story, he goes for a mistery one, like maybe a Sherlock Holmes book would be? There's still the supernatural content, after all he is still in the Dark Place and it has to be fitting for it to become true, but it's mainly fights and searching, trying to put the pieces togheter, not a irrational and scary mess like Departure was. The Dark Place is trying to get to him but he's in charge here now. Remember that he wrote almost all Departure out of his mind, in this case he is fully aware, so he placed himself in a place he "knew" and also gave him better chances, but still mantaining a misterious and "dark" story line (again, the story must remains true to itself).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying American Nightmare is better than the first one. It's not by far, but it's not bad, I still got my fun for the money I paid (I bought it on sale tho, no idea how much it actually costs). And I think it was a good filler for the lack of financial support they had. It's still Alan Wake for me. That said I bet the second full game will be as good as the first.

I love both games, they are a good change of pace from Fallout 4 and CS:GO :P. And I can't F**king believe that well get Alan Wake 2! I'm ecstatic!

PS. The story in both games is great, the pacing is just perfect, and for about 2€ on sale American Nightmare is worth every cent!

American nightmare gives u an end of the story specially if u collect all documents. And it was one of the few games were ive enjoyed the arcade mode, shows how much fun alan wakes gameplay can make.

Yeah it was only 2 hours for me, started and finished it this morning. It's almost more worth it for the arcade mode than it is for the story. Even then, only get it on a good sale if you really wanna try it imo.

Its not bad and I prefer its little story over whatever the hell those two DLCs were for the original Alan Wake.

Yeah the story is a lot better then those two... I really love the Twilight Zone-esk plot, and even though you visit 3 of the same places 3 times it's always mixed up and fun. And the arcade thing is also quite good.
Just think Groundhog day with supernatural physco's and a bit of Cuthulu mythos thrown in. Amercian Nightmare is the finisher that concludes the base game story so for fans only maybe.

Alan Wake 1 is 10x better. Play that first. Then, move onto this game-- it has massively improved gameplay, and the horde mode is fun, but the campaign is much shorter.

Also, keep a lookout. Turns out, Remedy just trademarked "Alan Wake's Return."

Yeah... Sam Lake all but confirmed Alan Wake to return months ago... It made me all happy! And I can't wait for Quantum Break! I really love the actor Ashmore :D
