As for meeting other players... you can do whatever you want. Fight them, try to ally with them (but they might stab you in the back) etc etc. That's the beauty of it, there are no hard rules.
gob caves - look for ropes leading up or stairs that havent caved in
crypts - blu lit floor cracks that raise to activate or blue lit stairs with soon to open gates
ice - not sure, maybe rafts in the water or a landing platform with a soon to ascend shaft elevator (has one in gob caves too)
you clear one or two rooms hoping to find one to easily cricle back to, or venture till you find an exit, the game was made with trios in mind so spawn and pacing is somewhat tilted to groups
The game does need a tutorial or something to read. I've heard it used to.
What to look for on the maps and such is not fun while learning the basics as it's information that a player should have. Less people would bounce off and you SHOULDNT need to read guides or anything outside the game to learn a game.
OP, watch these vids from beginning to end:

Thanks for sharing. Everything I found was over a year old and did not apply when it comes to escaping.
They REALLY helped. 100% advise all nubs to watch!
Compare same system 20+years ago vs now.. you have youtube, guides, STEAM discussion for polite questions... back then you learned by trial or pain.
The vid I saw on YT showed me that if you go to the Squire and alter the starting equipment you get some free potions which helped alot
It's not that they "don't hold your hand", it's that it has no consistent rules and there is absolutely no way to find out any kind of information that you need to know and should be able to find.
There's literally heaps of treasure just laying around, but you die in one hit no matter what you're wearing, no matter what level you are - nothing matters, you just die so you may as well just not engage. There is no reward for engaging with the dangers or obstacles - none whatsoever. Which wouldn't be a problem... if those obstacles and dangers could be avoided or mitigated somehow through your choices. Instead, your choices don't matter, and it's just a random coin flip to determine whether you have to wait through a five minute lobby after you see something moving.
Being punished for interacting with a game is not fun.
It's not "soulslike" or whatever excuse is popular these days.
It's just not a fun game.
And that's before we talk about the borderline-illegal money grab and microtransactions. It's just a fly-by-night crew pretending they're making a video game in order to gaslight rubes with "difficulty" red-herrings all designed to get gullible whales to spend money.
No. That just is not true.
You can't just react with any and all criticism of the game with "well but it's supposed to be hard and you have to git gud!"
The gameplay is clumsy, unresponsive, and unrewarding even if you execute perfectly.
On top of amazingly bad underlying design problems like spawning you underneath a frost giant that kills you in two hits before you even have a chance to raise your weapon because you just spawned into the sessions. Back to spending fifteen minutes waiting for a lobby to fill! Only to spend ten seconds in the next map dying because you spawned in the middle of eight goblins and their three archers instantly headshot you simultaneously before you could raise your weapon or move... because you just spawned.
All your items, all your everything, gone - you just lost everything.
Why? Because git gud?
There has to be an answer to "why should I waste time playing this game". And if the answer is "git gud", your game deserves its ignominious death.
People want to have fun.
Exploiting addicts and emotionally unstable losers to extract money from a cycle of abuse is so profoundly toxic.
