That option was given to people who pre-ordered the game, if you didn't pre-order then you need to buy the Elite Soldier Pack DLC.

This.

Welcome to where I was a week ago OP.

As in disgruntled as my Soldiers don't have helmets, and I cannot customize their color.

Luckily $4.99 later, and I can. Total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but w/e.

Its not game-changing in any way, so you are not required to spend the money if you think that is too high of a cost for pixels.

As I am not an incomeless child, $5.00 is no biggie. But to some, it is still too much.

But yeah, if I ever meet Jake Solomon or anyone else at Firaxis I will probably punch them in the juggular for not just including this in the game at launch and giving pre-orders something else.

Seriously, don't waste the money, its a simple ini tweak:

You can turn on color customization by editing XComGame.ini (in your XCOM folder under My Documents\My Games) and adding the following lines at the end:

[XComStrategyGame.XGCustomizeUI]
bArmorDecoAvailable=true
bArmorTintAvailable=true

This doesn't activate the preorder armor models, but it does give you the ability to change colors. Why they didn't include it in the first place is beyond me.

I have the preorder "bonus" stuff and never ended up using it. They are soldiers, not dolls to be dressed up and cuddled. They will be sent into battle against unknown forces and few of them will come home.

I would advice against developing any sort of attachment to any of them.

Coloring is useful for other reasons. Mark your colonels, so you only get kills with them when needed and let rookies take the experience.

Mark your Psi guys, mark the guy with the arc thrower, whatever.

It can help. It's worth the INI tweak. It's not worth $5.

It bugs me how people get annoied how something that doesn't change the game at all, people get annoied about not being given this, when it was a bonous and a thankyou, for pre-ordering. For one, I am glad for the high price of the DLC, if you dislike the price, don't buy it, or wait for a steam sale!

We all know there are many!
