XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Why always outnumbered?
OK, so it's just a game but this business of always being outnumbered is just irritating. We live on a planet of 7 billion people so why on earth are we always hugely outnumbered in battles? Why do we only have one skyranger when we know abductions always occur in threes? Why can't we freely hire scientists and engineers - it's not like the world has a shortage? Why?!?!

Because it would be boring if we outnumbered the aliens, when XCOM troops are superior one for one on average.

There's only one Skyranger because then it would be too easy.

You can't hire scientists and engineers.... Because, you can't.
because this is not the origenal xcom
I just completed a mission where there were only 5 aliens and I had my 6-member team. It's only happened once, but it did happen.
XCOM is strapped for resources. Each country that is paying you is, at the same time, fighting their own battles in their own streets. There isn't enough resources to go around. Especially for an *unproven* XCOM unit.

So, that explains away the Skyrangers and multiple Bases thing. Also having to choose which of three missions to takes adds to the 'bleak' factor of the game and the hopelessness of such an overwhelming enemy.

All your questions are simply answered with the lack of resources thing.

Earth was surprise attacked by a vastly superior enemy. We were bent over the barrel and buggered in the beginning.

In the late game, when you shoot down small UFO scouts you tend to get around about 7 enemies. Powerful ones usually, but they only slightly outnumber you.
And likewise, the game is designed to make you decide how you weigh rewards -- do you need cash, experienced soldiers, engineers, scientists, Elerium, et al. You're supposed to value what you get and feel at least a little scarcity.

I use the late game UFO crashes as a way to get my materiels up where I can fabricate everything for an awesome final strike team.

Interesting. At this point (Gollop Chamber built but unused; Normal difficulty) I'm seeing a minimum crew size of 10 for small scouts, and often more.

Granted, I've been stalling as I finish up research, upgrades, accumulate Mind Shields, and looking to build an all-Psi team...

To be honest the being outnumbered in battles thing can be a bit misleading except for those moments when a single soldier moving forward manages to wake up 9-12 mutons at the same time, which is a bit cheeky. The rest of the time the aliens that haven't been found yet don't seem to do much even if they have civilians to eat.

I'm finding the repeated choice of 3 missions in which you effectively fail the two you don't pick pretty odd though.
Frankly, I would ask the same exact question... Why always outnumbered?

...only I think you've got it bass-ackwards! My squad always outnumbers the aliens.

I have 6 squaddies on my team, typically we aggro 3 aliens... occasionally a few more will join the fray but usually it's because I boldly sprint ahead into their ambush.

You should modify your tactics such that you designate a single forward scout for the move, advance him forward to the max of the single move radius, aggro some aliens and use the second move to pull those aliens back into YOUR ambush.
I seem to some how be out numbered 95% of the time. But if I do the math Sniper=2 kills Assualt=1 Heavy=1 kill Support=1 5 kills in 1 turn. Thus I guess explains why the game spawns more units for me. I would need at least 10 enemies to even be in fear of my life or at least super heavy/powerful enemies.

I think you've got it exactly right there. Charging in just doesn't work.

On terror missions it actually appears to be beneficial not to charge in to save the civilians. I just played a terror mission against about 15 chryssalids and saved all but two of the civi's because the dormant aliens just weren't interested in them before seeing my squad.
The restriction has something to with balance imo. While I do not think its optimal, I think they made a great game with their own merits!

Not sure if this is your first time posting on these forums, just like to warn you in advance this is not a place for logic or reason. This a place for everyone to whine about every little thing.

Well ain't that the truth.
