(Video with some talk about the review and some gameplay there also).

Some quotes from the review:

"Defending against XCOM's mysterious alien invasion is one of the most challenging, intense gaming experiences of this generation. "

"Both of XCOM's layers present life-or-death conundrums to which there is no right answer. No matter what you pick, something or someone is going to suffer for it. This kind of tension and terror rarely occurs within mainstream gaming, and almost never with this level of skill in the execution. Don't let the "turn-based strategy" moniker scare you off; XCOM is a singular achievement that every gamer deserves to experience."

"Firaxis’ outstanding design strips away every last vestige of tedium from combat while maintaining the agency that makes the original such a classic. Though each soldier’s actions are constrained to a basic list, the tactical possibilities are as broad as your imagination"

"Occasional line-of-sight problems are the only blemishes on XCOM’s otherwise rock-solid technical execution."

"As much as I appreciate XCOM’s outstanding balance and tight design, the game could benefit from more variety across the board, and not just because I saw maps repeat (albeit with different spawn locations) more often than I’d like. Restricting the new equipment you can research largely to guns that do more damage and armor that grants more health is disappointing"

"Multiplayer is a barebones deathmatch mode...." "Only a handful of maps are available, and there’s no persistence or ranking structure. I don’t see any appeal to the multiplayer other than playing a couple rounds with a buddy just to see what commanding mutons and chryssalids is like."

Score 9.5/10

I kinda liked this part of the IGN review:

The lack of elbow room compounds that problem. Instead of letting players exercise their tactical muscle through maneuver and exploration, here the tactical decisions are heavily weighted towards just picking the right abilities and managing your cover. This tendency leaves you essentially playing an RPG that feels more like a cover-based shooter than a strategy game.
And I'm like, "If that's a problem, why does it sound awesome?"
I don't get it. Isn't "maneuver/exploration=cover/(explore)abilities"? I don't see the differenss.
Everyone do has right for his/her own opinion. But this IGN reviewer should review some game he actually know something about.
Those that can, DO. Those that can't, TEACH. Those that cannot teach..REVIEW! :)
Don't watch the IGN review.

The guy is a dumbass and it got negetive points for "Learning Curve" and "Streamlined tactics"

Iv come to the conclusion that IGN review games based on how much they are payed. They fawn over the COD franchise yet fail to recognise that many of their subscribers hate COD with a passion.

Well, you know, these game review comparison threads are mostly about self-validating your purchase choice.

I'm fine with my purchase choice.
I only preorder games I realy, realy want.
I have purchased every XCOM game so far more then ones so it would take a lot for me to not get this one.
From what I have seen in the demo and gameplay videos I am sure I will like the game.
Its just fun to see what reviews say anyway.
I don't take it that seriously.
I generally only take the reviewers opinions if a game is universally said to be horrible. I remember the original Gothic got bad reviews because people said it was to hard, so glad I didn't let that effect me. That game was absolutely amazing!

reviewers dont mean sjit in small numbers.. if thousands and thousands of user reviews say the game is good..its good.... if one guy at gamespot or whatever says it...he might like it..you dont etc..

Just take in ALL the reviews, read up, do your homework of what the game is and what you want/like... then decide if you buy the game or not..

It isn't hard, it's just the game won't hold players hand. As RPG should be.
I'm enjoying it so far. Not too sure what all of you are complaining about. I love that there's this thing called Iron Man mode, which makes all your decisions permanent. So it kind of makes me feel like I'm playing Fire emblem where the character deaths are permanent. Makes everything very intense, and makes the player think through every action.
@zoopopus,copy paste to the wrong topic?
Game looks very linear compared to the old one :/ hope its not a hold your hand and guied you the entire way kinda game.

How so? As far I as I know the SP is none-linear as the old ones. Only the first mission(aka.demo. Which you don't have to take, as some of the reviers point out, it will cost you 3 soldiers, but if u skip the tutorial you won't loose those 3 guys) is scripted.
