21:9 monitor and mouse problems
Using a 21:9 monitor screws up the mouse control of the cursor. the cursor or selection box travels further than the mouse cursor itself. resolution 2560x1080 on a single monitor. Switching to 1920x1080 resolves it but the game looks horrible because everything gets a bigger width. Please help.

^ You get a naturally wider FoV in hor+ games so it actually renders more on screen. Still, 4K needs tons more GPU performance regardless due to the massive increase in pixel density.

21:9 monitors run into issues when downsampling, as performance is much more of a hit vs conventional 16:9 monitors, and resolution oddities with non-supportive games are a problem.

Still, after getting my 21:9 two years ago and trying a 16:9 120Hz strobing monitor shortly after (amazing motion clarity), I will never, ever go back to 16:9. 16:10 at the lowest, which is sadly a near dead aspect ratio when it's the best for PCs. Oh well, maybe 21:10 will exist one day..

Edit: lol, nope, only "super wide" x:9 monitors have come out since then. Just what nobody asked for..

This isn't only an issue with 21:9. It exists to a lesser extent in 4k, as well. However at 4k, it's only most noticeable at the far edges of the screen. For example, editing a soldier and trying to use the left sliders for hair/helmet, the actual active are for the button is toward the center of the screen. That's the way most of this laid out for the mouse interface.

There's a set of invisible controls overlaying the image itself and the placement is calculated from the center of your screen. At 1080p, 16:9, the calcs they use to place the controls for the mouse will largely match up with there the button would be underneath it.

As the resolution increases, it becomes farther and father off, so that even at 4k, the 16:9 calc has issues. 21:9 just exacerbates it even more because the formula doesn't know how to correctly adjust for the extra horizontal space.
Hmm bought the addon and played it last night wondering why the mouse behavior is that bad... :(
Please make a fix for this 21:9 or high resolution problem! Does ist work in XCOM 2?
Just asked over on WSGF: http://www.wsgf.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=68&t=30739

As for the original game, I doubt Firaxis will ever release another patch. Just have to try and deal with playing it in 16:9.

^ reported issue seems to not be a problem in XCOM2: http://www.wsgf.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=164229#p164229

Might be other issues, but at least it sounds like it's playable this time.
It is still a bit of an issue on the Base Faciltities. Your mouse cursor needs to be way off the center of each facility block for it to be selected. I've also seen some selection problems in the Combat mode making selections of soldiers. However it is playable, but I'm not sure it's perfect yet.

I still think the benefits of the widescreen does not outweigh the disadvantages right now, and it seems forever int he future. I would still recommend a normal 1080p monitor as standard for gaming. All the other formats seem likely to have one or more issues.
^ Remember that 21:9 is the same vertically as 16:9, so if you can deal with the pillarboxing on content that doesn't support 21:9, then there's still no reason to use a 16:9 display over it. You'll get the advantages of 21:9 when you can, and fall back to 16:9 when you can't.

16:10 is a different story entirely. Supports 4:3 content unlike 16:9, so there's still a reason to keep a 16:10 monitor around. Shame the market dominance of TVs (and consumer illiteracy) ruined the PC market, so 16:10 displays don't really exist anymore. Still no consumer ones that are above 60Hz.. I've been waiting nearly 5 years for one. Was the whole reason I went 21:9 in the first place, as I couldn't justify an 'upgrade' to 16:9, even if I increased the resolution.

Same problem here, also healt bars out of place.
:steamfacepalm:
Doubt they will fix an "old game" even tho I'm late to the party and have just started playing it :)
I can confirm that with a controller the game is just fine as opposed to mouse and keyboard, I'm in 2560x1080 res.
For anyone landing here with a high ultra wide resolution (e.g. 3440x1440), on Windows 10, you probably noticed it's unplayable at that resolution (even with a controller); and the only 16:9 resolution is 1920x1080, which sucks and can't be changed through the config file anymore. If Windows or your graphics card software doesn't let you set a more decent 16:9 resolution like 2560x1440, you can try setting it with
this little tool [www.makeuseof.com]. Worked like a wonder for me.

This is never going to be fixed, unfortunately. I still maintain that these non-standard monitors are not a good choice for gaming, even newer games need patches and workarounds.

Is gamepad a solution for this? I'm just curious.
The closest I can get to a compromise is 2560 x 1440 fullscreen mode with those nasty black pillars either side. Problem is that certain text happens off-screen, like the combat text. Guess I'm going back to 1920 x 1080.

Thanks Firaxis, good to see you care about your customers... I probably would have bought XCOM2 had you bothered to fix this one.
Today I bought this game and faced the same problem.
