XCOM: Enemy Unknown wins Strategy Game Of The Year from Gamespot
http://www.gamespot.com/best-of-2012/genre-awards/index.html?page=5

That's second GOTY award. No "Best Game Of All Games This Year", true, but GOTY is GOTY.

Following claims are automatically considered irrelevant:

"Irrelevant award"
"They were bought"
"They have no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idea about games"

If you want to contest it, either provide coherent, well thought opinion or send your fire and brimstone filled complain straight to Gamespot.

There has to be a better strategy title than X-COM. Not that I dislike X-COM, I find it a lot of fun. But it's much more of a tactical game than a strategy game. Crusader Kings is a strategy game, so is Civ V. X-COM is tactical, and a "lite" tactical game at that.

Well, for a GOTY, the forums sure are slow.

Personally, after initially being very disappointed in the game I played some more and came to like it.
Now, after nearly finished with an ironman game(my first playthrough), I'm back to being disappointed.
All the missions tend to feel the same now and it's getting a little tedious.

The great big, garish shields for cover thingies really destroy the immersion for me and make the game seem very cartoonish.
The shlelds for cover are a horrible, horrible idea.
Really? Considering your troops probably are utilizing tactical gear with Heads Up Displays why shouldn't the commander get overlays as well?

XCOM is my GOTY pick this year. I definitely played it more than any other title this year.
was X-Com the only tactical/ strategy game released this year ?
Well, I guess it's only "tactical" game released this year, AFAIK

They're not irrelevant just because you say so :p . I know we've been over this with the VGA topic, but Gamespot is about as trustworthy as EA's PR department.

Same goes for Gamespy, IGN, Gametrailers... so I'm calling those out as pointless before you start a thread on one of them :p .

But alright, I'll throw you a bone from a website which I've actually been starting to see as pretty trustworthy (unlike those mentioned above :p ):

I consider those claims irrelevant. If you want to contest the claim, then make well thought and coherent answer. Just trying to swipe the award away saying "Irrelevant"... well, it works both ways.

And that's third GOTY now :D
The only similar game I caught this year was Jagged Alliance:Back in action... I doubt that I will replay XCOM several times, but at least I forced myself to do it till the end for once. Which wasn't the case of JA:BIA, where I quit cause the boredom was too heavy...

So considering the competition, yea, XCOM is the winner. Not making it any more superb in my eyes, though :-)

But hell, it brought me some 25 hours of fun and entertainment... For a price of 40 USD or so... that makes it some 1.5 USD/hour... not bad ratio, although far from the best price/entertainment time games I played :-D
I think shogun 2 FOTS was a much better game.

But I HAVE given you an answer before, remember? On the VGAs award topic you made: they're not trustworthy. ESPECIALLY Gamestop, the lords of giving 10 to games like Grand Theft Auto IV (seriously?), Metal Gear Solid 4 (SERIOUSLY?) or Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 (which is just making fun of us at this point). Or the whole Jeff Gerstmann debacle with Kane & Lynch?

So yeah, they're irreleavant because they're not trustworthy :p . A recurring trend in the gaming industry, unfortunately...
Well, you have given reasons, even if I don't agree with them. Thus you get at least benefit of doubt. Were lucio to appear, we would most likely get something I am referring in the OP.
Probably something along the lines of "of course they had to give the award to the new XCOM, Gamespot would never work in the industry if they didn't do it".

Because that's what he said when Julian Gollop said he liked the new game :p .
