Personally, after initially being very disappointed in the game I played some more and came to like it.
Now, after nearly finished with an ironman game(my first playthrough), I'm back to being disappointed.
All the missions tend to feel the same now and it's getting a little tedious.
The great big, garish shields for cover thingies really destroy the immersion for me and make the game seem very cartoonish.
The shlelds for cover are a horrible, horrible idea.
XCOM is my GOTY pick this year. I definitely played it more than any other title this year.
They're not irrelevant just because you say so :p . I know we've been over this with the VGA topic, but Gamespot is about as trustworthy as EA's PR department.
Same goes for Gamespy, IGN, Gametrailers... so I'm calling those out as pointless before you start a thread on one of them :p .
But alright, I'll throw you a bone from a website which I've actually been starting to see as pretty trustworthy (unlike those mentioned above :p ):
http://www.destructoid.com/the-winner-of-destructoid-s-best-strategy-game-of-2012-240581.phtml
And that's third GOTY now :D
So considering the competition, yea, XCOM is the winner. Not making it any more superb in my eyes, though :-)
But hell, it brought me some 25 hours of fun and entertainment... For a price of 40 USD or so... that makes it some 1.5 USD/hour... not bad ratio, although far from the best price/entertainment time games I played :-D
But I HAVE given you an answer before, remember? On the VGAs award topic you made: they're not trustworthy. ESPECIALLY Gamestop, the lords of giving 10 to games like Grand Theft Auto IV (seriously?), Metal Gear Solid 4 (SERIOUSLY?) or Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 (which is just making fun of us at this point). Or the whole Jeff Gerstmann debacle with Kane & Lynch?
So yeah, they're irreleavant because they're not trustworthy :p . A recurring trend in the gaming industry, unfortunately...
Because that's what he said when Julian Gollop said he liked the new game :p .
