I also sometimes see a soldier wearing his armor while drinking at the bar. (Some serious paranoia there... or is it prescience with the forthcoming Enemy Within expansion and it's hints of base defense?)
I would love to see my soldiers with their customization intact as they relaxed after a harrowing mission but somehow I doubt they will include it in the expansion since so few people seem to zoom in. (I believe it's these details that make this game more interesting for me... I actually look at the background in most games either for appreciation of the developer's art or for clues.) EX: I often watch the situation-room scrawl to see what effects my choices have.
This is one of the reasons why I am enjoying the new Shadowrun game on Steam... It has a similar turn-based tactical system as XCOM as well as considerable detail in the maps. (Gameplay is a bit linear but the amount of on-line content makes up for that a bit. It even has a similar newscrawl in the main bar.)
funny thing is all of my soldiers are infact my soldiers (with their hairstyles), infact i was actually surprised since i thought they're all random
