It's a pretty nice feature. Makes it fun to see the actual goings on of your base, rather than it just being a static image.

I enjoy this feature to the extent that I have experimented with it. EX: Giving all my soldiers the same wild blue hair to see if it carries over. (It doesn't, I discovered some random soldiers working out on the treadmill with 'normal' hair.) I was also somewhat irritated to discover that apparently one has to be completely bald in order to wear a helmet or even a hat.
I also sometimes see a soldier wearing his armor while drinking at the bar. (Some serious paranoia there... or is it prescience with the forthcoming Enemy Within expansion and it's hints of base defense?)

I would love to see my soldiers with their customization intact as they relaxed after a harrowing mission but somehow I doubt they will include it in the expansion since so few people seem to zoom in. (I believe it's these details that make this game more interesting for me... I actually look at the background in most games either for appreciation of the developer's art or for clues.) EX: I often watch the situation-room scrawl to see what effects my choices have.

This is one of the reasons why I am enjoying the new Shadowrun game on Steam... It has a similar turn-based tactical system as XCOM as well as considerable detail in the maps. (Gameplay is a bit linear but the amount of on-line content makes up for that a bit. It even has a similar newscrawl in the main bar.)

Huh, didn't know that. So does your base get more lively when you have the full 100 soldier limit at capacity? Do you see SHIVs roaming around?

probably not, although that would be awesome...

I was pretty excited about the ant farm part of it but in the end, I barely ever bothered looking at it. 1) because it was *way* too cumbersome to zoom in and move around and 2) barely anything happens that makes it worth more than a cursory glance rather than looking at it for a while, though like mentioned above, it was nice to see your own men standing in the bar, or a captured alien.

I would love it more if it did'nt show the games low budget up. So much potential, hope the sequel gets a much larger budget to add to the fine detail.

When I zoom in too much the framerate just drops. But I did try it out once.

Scroll with the mouse middle button. Or perhaps use G and T.
