Enemy Within DLC: Worth it?
I'm kicking around the idea of buying the DLC, but it's pricetag is pretty hefty. The original game got a little monotonous after the first couple of games. Does this help with that? Thanks for your input.

you think that all of the new maps the meld the new multiplayer the whole new missions THE ALL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE GAME is a DLC??? no i call all of this a E-X-P-A-N-S-I-O-N

Sooo, that's why steam store lists it as DLC? Also, anytime the Borderlands franchise expanded its gameplay, it was listed as DLC. New maps on Call of Duty games are released as DLC. It sounds to me like you're getting 3-4 times the DLC that you normally would!

To the OP, I say it is way worth it! I don't see how you can go wrong if you're getting 4 times the new downloaded content that you normally would with other games. Had they decided to sell this DLC seperately, I am sure that this amount of new content would cost at least $40 bucks. :D:

Nah, it's an expansion. The devs even refer to it as such.

I think the Base Defense Mission alone was worth the price of admission

And the difference is?

do you actually think they will put so high price for a DLC.

While it is technically downloadable content, you are purchasing a product that expands the core gameplay of the original game, an Expansion. DLC is really just a blanket term for anything that adds to, or modifies a game, and its a relatively new term at that. Not too terribly long ago, game makers used to only release expansions, as they had a much more difficult time maketing and advertising products that did not add substantial conent. they didnt bother selling things like color palletes, extra costumes/weapons, or horse armor

Long story short
It IS DLC
But an EXPANSION is a much better descriptive term for this content

Totally worth it! Rounds ou tthe game nicely and pretty much gets rid of the monotony you speak of. Get it.

For someone who hasn't played the base game yet, if I knew I was going to get the expansion eventually, should I play the base game vanilla first? Or is it just better with the expansion if you've never played it before (like the Civ V expansions, there's no reason not to play with them)?

Pretty much, kinda like.... a package and a bunch of packages being a shipment..... I guess. That's what I'm getting from one of the replies yet another one saying a 'shipment arent packages'

But whatever, we've already hijacked the OP's thread far enough ;)

edit: BTW OP, it's $19.99 at gamefly.com right now http://digital.gamefly.com/#!/download-xcom-enemy-within/5006804

For a new release, this might be the lowest discount they'll ever do... though it is also possible that it can go much lower.

if you think it's that expensive maybe you shouldn't be playing games

You do realize this expansion pack and civilization's BNW expansion pack is sold in stores as an expansion pack? They're listed as DLC on steam for simplicity sake.

To all who debate DLC vs. expansion:
I feel I ought to say something. To me, they're the same thing when it comes to purchasing something online that you download. DLC is an ambiguous term, and anything you buy on Steam that isn't a stand-alone game is labeled as DLC (check the store page for EW, it's got "DLC" plastered on the corner). It's kind of splitting hairs, and if you feel a need to do that, have fun. I'd rather spend my precious free time playing games. :)

Thanks for the info, Kismette, I'll look into it.

Crux, I could in theory buy it right now, regardless of price. I want to know: a) if it's worth buying in the first place; b) if it's worth buying at the price they've listed it. Based on all of the answers given so far, I've established it's worth it to buy at all, and it would be a better use of my money to get it on sale. I don't know about your life situation, but I don't have millions of dollars, and I have a family to feed. I don't buy anything at full price if I don't have to. If you can do that, more power to you.

the new maps alone are pretty much worth the price of admission.

Granted if you haven't played the base game you probably haven't had time to get tired of "Ionic Column Library Terror Mission" and "Diner Abduction" and "That one UFO crash with a truck"

If by DLC, You mean the Enemy Within, it's not some silly modern "give us 1/10th of the game price, we give You hat" DLC, it's more like the old school expansion - new game mechanics, new maps, new second wave options... It helps with the monotony, and makes You wanna XCOM again.

You can play the expansion directly.

As far as I've seen, the main story remains the same.

This expansion (or DLC) adds new content witch expands (greatly) the campaign, but just that.

At the essence, it's a civilization expansion.
