If you got Slingshot, the third mission in that arc is taking down a battleship so if you play with that, you're garantueed to get one very early with weak crew (thinmen and sectoids plus a single muton and single cyberdisc). Just don't expect to be able to research it early as it would take about a month to research both that soon.
Oh, in that case it's not possible to shoot it down. Luck has much influence here. :) Firestroms are your main goal after alien base assault, because you can't hold panic level acceptable due to escaped UFO's (abductors and etc). And, of course, escaped UFO grants more chances to get another Battleship and another broken sattelite.
On other UFOs, you land outside then and then storm them.
On Battleship, you land on the battleship, and then fight your ay to the control room. Entire map is the battleship.
