Medals
Anyone know how these are earned? I Earned multiples of the first 5, then held off on the base assault for a year to catch up research and base building... havent earned a medal in close to 40 missions.

You can only get a certain number of each, I don't know what the number is off the top of my head, that's why you haven't earned any recently.

Urban Combat Medal = do Missions in Urban maps.
Defender's Medal = have someone die or be stablized on one of your missions.
International Service Cross = Missions on a different continent than your base.
Council Medal of Honor = Council Missions.
Star of Terra = Base defense mission.

It's not fully known for a lot. Some are apparently awarded for finishing Council Missions, some for Abductions in City-Areas. The only known one is the final one, which you get only from the Base Defense.
Also, they are heavily limited. For example, the Urban medal can only be aquired five times (and is the most common one with that)
=( Losing my medal-ed soldiers is going to be tough... seeing as how I never plan on finishing the last mission of my first EW game--- Just a save game for tactical missions and Soldier Skilling up that I can always load up and kill nasty booger flicking aliens.

I forget where, but somewhere else on the forums, someone mentioned that the medal count might 'reset' or subtract that medal that was lost if the soldier with them dies, but if the soldier with the Star of Terra dies, you're just SOL because it only comes from a story mission.

I took the XP bonus to it.. and that soldier is in charge of leading the squaddies thru council missions for leveling up. Ill just have to be careful with him.

A strange thing I've noticed is that dismissed troops don't seem to reset the medal count.

I dismissed an assault because she ended up with poor health due to hidden potential, but never gained the medals back.

Well, are you going to strip the medal from a soldier just because they aren't as healthy as another and you are dismissing them from the program?

But seriusly, probly just an oversight in design. "Who would dismiss a soldier with a medal?" thinking in the back of their minds leading to not having dissmissal reset the count.

The "Defender" one is odd. I got one after a Terror Site, with no casualties amongst the soldiers. So there must be another way of getting it. It was the second of that playthrough, the first was as expected - a rookie dying on his first mission.

I don't get any medals either.
I didn't even unlock every medal ... and ... do i have to let my soldiers die just because they get a medal for dying? My soldiers barely take any damage on missions ...

Exactly what I was wondering! Thanks, Smpmax.

Is it okay for me to say here that the Star of Terra is the single best named medal? I mean really, I renamed all the others, figuring the last one I would name 'Star of Terra' then 'We did that for you!' when it came up.

I think they're named a lot like real medals: The more common ones have more common names. I renamed "Defender's Medal" but the rest aren't bad.

You do not get a refund for your medals you have to go back and earn them over again. If a soldier dies or is dismissed you have to get the medals by doing their requirements again but you can get them back up to a set limit except of course the star of tera.
The defender medal was already explained. The soldier does not have to _die_ they have to be critically wounded but most of the time they do die. If your soldiers are not able to take any damage it's because you are playing ez mode and might should try classic or impossible for at least some degree of challenge.

I should also note if you use the second heart gene mod this should help get defender medals.
