FIX YOUR GAME PLEASE 2k
This updating executable is still not working. I have tried everything in other "solved" threads and this ♥♥♥♥ game still wont launch. I am boycotting all future 2k games until this game works when I hit play.

Ok Finally fixed that damn trash bug just go to your Xcom folder then go to the Binaries Folder then Win32 folder then find XComgame.exe right click on that exe; go to properties, go to the COMPATIBILITY tab, then TURN ON "Disable Fullscreen Optimizations” then just double click the file and the game will start. After the first time of starting then the game will work fine from starting it in your Steam Library by clicking on the Play button.
For me the folder is here “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown\Binaries\Win32” but easier way to get to it is to your steam library right click on XCOM: Enemy Unknown then select Properties then go to Installed Files then click on Browse and it will take you to where you game is installed.

Didn't help!

Nothing anyone else has said has worked for me. The game throws the same messages on both my desktop and Steam Deck. It's completely dead.

Game worked for years, why did they mess with it now?

Me and my friend both have the same problem, and disabling the fullscreen optimisations doesn't help, even if we do it for every single executable in the folder hierarchy. It seems like this might be a problem with the version steam is supplying for updates & file validation, as older installs don't seem to have the problem until verifying cache.

Installation problem.
No vcredist or DirectX 9 is getting installed anymore, which was always being installed at first game start.

But that's just an observation, no tip to fix it

It is still working for me. Can't understand unless those with issues are running Windows 11, which has many known issues with games and other non-Microsoft software.

DirectX 9 from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ie/download/details.aspx?id=8109

For vceredist, Google "Visual C++ Redistributable Runtimes All-in-One". There is a link to a zipped installable from this month on techpowerup dot com.

This is likely all because of Microsoft 11's lack of backwards compatibility, nothing from Steam or 2k..

Windows 10, and it used to work just fine. I already have all that old junk on my pc coz I like old games. Just went to log in for some old fuzzy feelings and it won't even pretend like its loading.
