depends on what you mean by "other game"
Originally posted by same name:
all previous XCOM games

Turn-Based Tactics games like:
1. Jagged Alliance (never actually played it)
2. Blood Bowl (pretty fun)
Originally posted by different sub-genre:
Turn-Based Strategy games like:
1. Civ V (others would count, but this is the most recent. plus: its by the same dev)
2. Might & Magic: Heroes VI (same as above)
3. Endless Space (has one of the best cinematic battles ever, despite being turn-based)
4. Medieval II: Total War (haven't played the recent ones)
Originally posted by different sub-genre:
Real-Time Tactics games like:
1. R.U.S.E. (haven't actually played it)
2. World in Conflict (never played the expansion)
3. Tom Clancy's Endwar (very fun if you use a mic)
Originally posted by different sub-genre:
Real-Time Strategy games like:
1. Company of Heroes (all expansions and sequel)
2. Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion (very light and cheap game, the latest and extremely fun)
3. Dawn of War (both generation of games and it's respective expansions. Dark Crusade in particular is one of my fav games of all time. caution: Soulstorm sucks)
4. Supreme Commander (prefer the first game, but both are fun. caution: both games are technically different sub-genres)
5. Starcraft 2 (never played the first one or its expansion)
6. Anno 1404 (more city-building sim than strategy, but fun nonetheless)
7. Universe at War (also very fun. needs more love)
8. C&C 3 and Red Alert 3 (same number 'cause they're technically the same franchise)
9. Settlers: Rise of an Empire (also more city-building sim than strategy, but its my fav of all Settlers games)
10. Spellforce 2 (and its first 2 expansions. one of the best mixes of RTS and RPG, but kinda lacks in both)

a/n: yeah i love RTSs

I've heard good things about Expeditions Conquistador. You might want to look into that as well.

Some oldschool games that you can get for free:

Planet's Edge was one of the 1st Sci-fi squad games I played.

Also Fallout Tatics, Fire Emblem (Emulator), Advance Wars (Emulator) and Battle Isle.

New Games:
Shadowrun is probably the most recent Squad based out right now that you can level up and have lots of different classes.

Dawn of War 2 is realtime but focused on squads and upgrading them and still killing aliens.

Frozen Synapse was pretty good a straight forward with more focus on LoS.

Battle World Kronos follows Battle Isle's foot steps.

Also a new Fire Emblem on 3DS.

Plus a bunch of Japanese Tactics games like FF Tactics, Disgea, Grotesqu Tactics, Valkyrie Chronicles (PS3 only).

More Fantasy would be:
Elven Legacy, HOMM series, Eador, Kings Bounty series, Warlock

ufo afterlight is very similiar except not turn based, although you can pause and give commands.

On Steam, there's an Early Access game called "Xenonauts", which is attempting to be a more modern version of the original X-Com.

You can get it on Steam with Dosbox set to go to play XCOM:Apocalypse
The ufo series looks promising. If that isnt what you mean by "Ufo defence", becuase I assumed you meant the original Xcom.

Even though they're in Alpha (and they're quite different from XCOM in their own ways) you might want to keep an eye out for Steam Marines (already on Steam Early Access) and Invisible, Inc. (formerly known as Incognita). They're shaping up to be pretty good games and I can tell you from personal experience that they sure do follow up on their inspiration from XCOM in being pretty tactical and harsh as hell in punishing you for your mistakes.
