If I can offer you any advice: just don't get emotionally attached to your soldiers. It's only going to make it harder on you.
You only have one tutorial mission.
Actual "free" play with fully randomized missions starts after that.
yes. far more than 10 missions. but with more reloads than you could possible imagine...or maybe you can
It's possible if you play conservatively...i.e, move your squad slowly in a compact fashion. Only engage one pack of enemies at once, etc...Use full cover wherever possible and hunker down to avoid critical hits.. You can always retreat as a unit if you feel as though the odds are stacked against you in a confrontation. Find decent cover, and just put everyone on overwatch. Many enemies will aggresively go after you once engaged, i.e. Thin Men, Mutons & Mechtoids...and 'ambushing' them in such fashion can be a pretty effective way of dealing with them.
Make sure plasma gun carrying enemies like Thin Men and Mutons don't have a line-of-sight on any of your soldiers at the end of your turn. Even in full cover one critical hit can kill your soldiers in the early game. If you don't think you can kill them on your current turn and they have l.o.s. retreat back out of sight and go into overwatch..
This parrot is deceased!!
I don't mind admitting it: I'll create a save before the mission and then decide afterwards if I'll redo it or not. If something is not working why not replay the mission and try something different?
I suppose if your good at these things one play through on 'ironman' without using save's (unless you have to turn your computer off) might be interesting but this is my 1st game of this kind.
