The key to effective SHIV's is an up to date weapon and the foundry projects. Heck, one of them gives SHIV's infinite regeneration at 2hp a turn. All hail das uber panzer!
E.g. A basic SHIV is great if you have squadsize 5 or 6, and a sniper with squadsight. But if it takes up one squad place out of 4, it is not really value for money.
Also keep in mind that SHIV's don't level up. Even if they seem a good fit at first, they do take away a spot for a soldier which can upgrade. That soldier will be more valuable in later mission....
Do shivs count as line of sight for squadsight? cani use them to spot targets like a regular squad member?
And yes, they count as squadsight spotters. Which is pretty much my favorite use for them. With all the foundry upgrades they tank reasonably well, pack a nice punch and uncover lots of targets.
