Short range misses
The one thing about this game that I cannot get along with is the very close range misses. If an alien is less than 6 feet away but is around a corner , I will step my soldier out to shoot at point blank and the ♥♥♥♥ will still miss the target. And this is not a rare occurance by any means.I should point out I am playing long war on classic level. The ini file has often been quoted to tweak the game, so is there a way to tweak this particular problem.

This game, during missions, is a turn based representation of a dynamic battle. The alien is not simply sitting there waiting to be shot.
Military battles in the real world are full of such scenarios where close-range shots are often missed.

At close range, tiny minute movements can cause a direct hit to miss completely or hit ineffectual areas.

Welcome to why real life firearms have always progressed towards "more dakka"
Guns are accurate, people aren't. At long range, a single degree difference in angle is meters while motion is comparatively small. At close range, a single degree difference is inches while motion is comparatively large. Both make aiming hard because corrections are either exagerated or under-expressed. Mid range is actual ideal because small movement = small corrections.

Reason I only go melee with shotguns, KSM, and Long War's sawed-offs. 100% chance to hit means no chance to get RNG screwed.

Sawed Off's are practically melee weapons, seeing as how if the enemy is literally not adjacent to you, it's not possible to shoot them (even if you share the same cover.

yes.

what gun are you using? Assuming you aren't using a sniper or strike rifle....there is something in the ini to adjust ranged modifiers so you can give things a better bonus at close range if you so desire.

"CLOSE_RANGE = 14.0f ; Distance at which close range penalties/bonuses are assessed
AIM_CLIMB = 3.0f
ASSAULT_AIM_CLIMB = 6.0f ; rate at which weapons with the eWP_Assault property lose aim when they are above the close range threshold
ASSAULT_LONG_RANGE_MAX_PENALTY = -100
SNIPER_AIM_FALL = -5.0f ; rate at which weapons with the eWP_Sniper property lose aim when they are under the close range threshold
"

so.... We can reduce the range of triggers (or increase it) and increase the aim bonus.

Do note that enemies get massive amounts of passive defense as you progress.

nobody cares.

not what he asked.

he's not asking to be judged

he's just asking how to modify the ini.

And... increasing enemy defense is something he would not like to know? Or like, get rid of? I mean it's the main reason that point blank shots even miss.

I don't know how to tweak the .ini but short range misses actually do happen

First he asserted his (wrong) opinion about how close-range shots should not miss. And then he asked how to tweak it.

It's only right that his (wrong) opinion should be judged before anyone even bothers find out how to tweak it.

Perhaps I should explain. This is just a rant, i had cleared the first encounter with no casualties then on the next encounter I lost one soldier because my covering squaddie missed at close range. Que alot of swearing and ranting. So I just wanted fellow Xcom players to know about it. My good Karma has returned and I shall no duobt continue with my campaign. Happy hunting.

I had an instructor tell me of an incident while he was on a patrol (Viet Nam).

Said his squad heard a lot of shooting, then his scout came sprinting back from around the corner - reports that he came around a corner at the same time a Viet scout did, was face to face, not even 20 feet between them. Fired off his rifle and ran.

Swore he killed the guy.

So the squad moves up, gets to that spot. There are casings all over the place. Not a single drop of blood, let alone a body.

Both guys had surprised each other, fired off their magazines, turned tail and ran. Neither got a single hit on the other.
