This has been going on for the last 2 years, because some drivers are tweaked for other games and not all games are tested.
May have to restart your computer also before starting up the game, Windows OS is slow, but enough memory should be cleared for the game when it starts. Anti-virus software, updated drivers for your hardware in your computer and such.
But that message is clear - Windows can not find a problem, because the video card drivers quit working is the way I read it, because I been through most version of Nivida graphics drivers and no - they did not work correctly being tweaked for othe games or SLI or whatever.

or you can read about all the other games that crash also and give out Error Code CX00000005 generic code - meaning the game quit working and Windows can not find a solution.
For the most part, it is the drivers, and finding one that works with the game, then it will also work with other games - at least on my computer. And believe me I have tried most all of them either with my old GT440 or my newer GTX 650Ti card.
And if only getting 1 or 2 frames a second more in a game, it does not amount to much when the drivers will not work with all games you may have but will work for general purpose computing, which they all will, but not with all games.
thank you very much.
If this doesn't work i've got something new running in the background making some of my games crash.
hopefully it's just nvidia keeping up with their tradition of having their head planet up their butt.
Again thank you.
Still the game may crash once in a while, seems like sometimes play the game from start to through the base defense mission, and then may crash one time when continuing, but again never can be sure if it will or not, so I save along the way, all bought up on threads before, again, and again, and again , and again over the last 2 years.
Unless something else is wrong with your computer or you are using Steam Cloud which I do not use at all, since all that has to sync when first starting up the game and with saved games on the cloud and on your computer - menu item - Steam-Settings - Interface (or Cloud) - Off whatever being online to Steam and I play games - offline to Steam.
Unless an audio or video streaming problem on the computer (or audio drivers updated or whatever) that is all I can say.

So far version 344.48 seems to work with XCOM and Beyond Earth, and will no doubt work with other 4X strategy turn-based games I have, well, you know, some older games still playable without - before Steam and games.
That's a laugh there's nothing clean about windows registry.
I figured october was the last time everything was normal.
XCOM is good now. and i still need to install Men of War Assault Squad 2 and give it a try
because i got pissed off and deleted it. not thinking about the nvidia update.
I think everything's back to normal.
((NORMAL))
Sometimes you get what you pay for. and sometimes you pay for a title in your inventory.
Only other way to do it, is to delete in Device Manager your graphics card and also checkbox - uninstall drivers (if Control Panel - Programs and Features - regular uninstall a program does not work either), but like I said - Windows keeps backup of drivers all the time like a Pack Rat.
It may not hurt to check by doing the uninstall drivers (by deleting your graphics card out of Windows in Device Manager) until you get back to Standard VGA drivers when re-starting the computer (all the time you must end up re-starting the computer) until that happens, and then all previous drivers like with a graphics card you may have tried but installed new ones over the old ones - leave all of that on your computer. When Windows re-starts and goes through telling you what the graphcis card is and ends up declaring that it can not find drivers for it, then you know that Windows has finally gotten rid of all backup drivers it kept on the computer like a Pack Rat.
I have an audio card that changes drivers sometime often over the last couple of years ( professional audio interface I use for sounds on the computer ) and I must have had several old versions of drivers left on the computer. Until I got back to Device Manager showing - Standard VGA as my graphics card (and not my real graphics card) and Microsoft Drivers for showing HDMI drivers - the default with Windows drivers for graphics and audio in that respect) it kept installing old drivers it had kept in Windows. Then when everything is cleaned out again showing in Device Manager - Standard VGA graphics and Microsoft HDMI drivers then install the new drivers for the graphics card and all old drivers will be cleaned out, otherwise Windows will keep all of those drivers aroundl and install them. In other words, when Windows runs out of drivers and only installs the default drivers because it does not know what to do, then installing the regular new drivers that should be for the graphics card with the Nvidia install program can be done.
That's Windows and what it does. If you used a Clean Install with the Nvidia program install then you may have no old drivers in your system, but if one time you did not and just installed new drivers over the old drivers - all those old drivers will be still on your computer kept by Windows.
Is it necessary? Maybe not, but cleaning out old drivers whether using a third-party program say like from guru3d.com website that will do that, or the Device Manager way will clean up the computer. Also a Registry program to check the Registry for items no longer needed on the computer is another way to clean the Registry.
Programs are suppose to do that but like always it seems like programs keep stuff on the computer if you un-install the program and do not check for Folders and Files it just decides to keep on even if un-installing the program.
No, those programs are not suppose to do that, but they do anyway.
Well, good luck with any of that if needed.
I really enjoyed those years of gaming.
Now it's not about the game you buy It's about the broke game you RENT.
