Long War Startup Crash
Decided to play EW with Long War again today, but for some reason the game crashed as soon as the "Loading User Settings" window popped up. I played a couple months ago with no issues before then either, and I haven't touched any of the XCOM files since then. I've tried verifying, which caused EW to run and start properly but without Long War installed. I've tried full reinstalling, deleting all the related folders and all, and LW still crashes at the User Settings menu. What the hell is going on?

The first time start always crashes. Did you try starting it up again immediately after the 1st crash?
I did, and it made no difference.

Hey, I have the exact same problem.

I have also deleted local content, deleted any mention of XCom from my user / windows folders and performed full reinstalls of the game and the mod - but the issue keeps coming back.

I originally had Long War 13B. I have by now repeatedly uninstalled everything and tried both 14A and 14B. They all do the same - the screen freezes when "Loading User Settings" once you've started up the game.
i been having this problem also, if you want to play it put steam into offline mode and that will work fine, im hoping that they will hot fix this soon.
hope that helps/

I found a thread on how to delete Steam Cloud files: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2470784

That Cloud Deletion guide is pretty good but it focuses on your Steam/Userdata folder. However, there's also a file called profile.bin in C:\Users\YOURNAME\My Documents\My Games\Xcom and I'm pretty sure Steam Cloud also restores that. I haven't figured out how to remove it from the cloud so it keeps coming back.

I'm currently downloading XCom from Steam (again!), with cloud disabled. I'm hoping a fresh install does not download cloud files along with it.
Cypher's suggestion works - set Steam to offline. Top left, choose "Steam" and then "Go offline".

I'm sure properly deleting your Cloud files will solve the issue too but I can't figure out how to do that. Something always seems to stick.

I just like to confirm: going into offline-mode, loading the game and starting the mission works. I just saved the game immediately before taking any actions with my squad, exited the game and went into online-mode again. Afterwards I could load the last save game without any crash and finished the mission in online-mode getting an achievement as well.
