I've stopped doing it, but it is something that is sometimes impossible to avoid. Especially with Seekers. The way the game is made makes it hard to not use, so what the heck, gridsurf away.
I have a suggestion how how this could potentially be removed or at least tuned down a lot: If a tile is occupied in the FOW, your soldier is shown to be able to take that tile - but if you make a move order to said tile, you will not be able to move there. That way you cannot scan the FOW, since ordering a move on a non-occupied tile would result in a (probably terrible) move. Finding Aliens in the FOW would then be a matter of dumb luck, and this is XCOM so I personally have no problems with that.
I don't know if it's moddable, but it would be suave if it was.
