General Van Doorn, You piece of ♥♥♥♥.
I cannot get the man to follow me on my classic, ironman, longwar playthrough and im ♥♥♥♥ed lol it says approach him so I put my men right next to him but nothing happens. I have waited around 6 turns as he yells at me to get down here. Where? I am in your face you old ♥♥♥♥ing senile ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Anyways, is there a way to fix this? Things were just starting to look up for me

Back all your troops off and wait a few turns with nobody in his circle/range.Then move within Van Doorns circle with the trooper that triggered the convo with Van doorns bodyguard at the beginning of mission.

I've had this happen and doing the above (waiting out the trigger) worked for me.Let me know how it goes.

Gave it a try and it did not work so I threw a grenade at him instead. Thanks anyways tho

I had this happen to me once (Portent) - back off all your men so you don't see him anymore then save and exit the game. Reload the save and he'll respond.

I lost this mission because a car decided to explode on the escort guy for no apparent reason. There's no way it could have been shot unless a stray round from all the way across the bridge hit it. Since half the cars on the map are already on fire; I didn't notice. It then decided to explode exactly when this stupid guy was next to it, as if it it was deliberately scripted to explode only on his presence, nothing else. This is why I'm never playing Ironman again. Do not play this game on Ironman. Whatever BS the game decides to feed you(such as marines moving on their own for no apparent reson, wasting turns); you're stuck with it.

Been told you can actually glitch that and save the guy on at the top car instead of van doorn to save the map. Map can be broken triggers sometimes is what I'm saying. and yeah had a problem with PORTENT map too. it eventually worked though.

I had an interesting bug with the Peter Van Doorn rescue mission where after I saved and exited the game, I came back and for some reason, Doorn had become the soldier sitting by the SUV at the start of the map!

Not knowing this, went down to the SUV in the trench where he normally was, nothing happened, so went into overwatch at the end of my turn.

HOWEVER, every single pre-determined Thin Man drop happened at the same time! Cycling through my soldiers, fretting about not knowing what to do, I stumbled onto Peter Van Doorn himself, only to find out he had morphed and teleported into that first soldier.....

Of course, his location in the level (i.e. a single move from extract) prompted the game to realise the VIP's progress from initial location to extract had gone from 0% to 100%, thus all the Thin Men HALO's came into play.

Hmmm did not try saving and restarting while away from him. It is to late now I failed the mission and the one after that lol gonna go for try number 8 I think it is. I have beaten classic longwar before but been awhile since I have played.

My preferred way of dealing with Van Dorn is to kill all the aliens, then take a single trooper right up to him. That trooper looks him right in the eye and, without saying a single word, spits on his shoes, turns away and the whole team marches back to the Skyranger, leaving that annoying fether standing in the ruins. cloaked in nothing but shame and failure.

Yeah, we're just going to leave you here, cowering behind the car while your troops died protecting you, to have all the fun.

If you're going to deliberately fail the mission, you may as well walk him into aliens then or blow him up with a rocket. You're being too kind by leaving him there alive.

Agreed. I restarted and passed this mission but now I got a problem with friendly fire... first panic mission with the crawlling spider monsters I have to bring three rookies.. anyhow one gets sliced up real good so what does another do? Well panic and shoot the third rookie of course killing her. So my sniper gets me out of that jingle and another gets eaten so I am thinking ♥♥♥♥ this lets get outta here I have lost to many ranked up guys already. Nope panic and hunker down rightt in front of the enemy thats what we are going to do... Hey atleast I was able to retreat with 2/5 of my guys and it is just Argentina anyways.

Further to my previous post, I actually found some screenshots showing what I was trying to describe:

As you can see, Van Doorn, with his body armour can clearly be seen crouching next to the red car, but the fake Van Doorn is by the white car.

Moving this guy to the extract, and not the real Van Doorn, finished the mission if I recall correctly.

This was after reaching Van Doorn, getting him to follow me and then saving the game and coming back to it.

Nice, were you able to rescue both of them then? I always felt bad leaving the other man behind. Would be cool if you could rescue soldiers on missions and they become a recruit afterwards.

Nah, the mission actually finished as soon as the fake Van Doorn was moved into the evac zone, seeing as all the Aliens were dead. Kind of a strange bug, but completed the mission anyways.

I assume he survives like the MELD cannisters if hes not dead when the mission ends. you just don't fly him back home is all.
