Yes, it matters very much - LW Workshops work very differently than the vanilla ones.
I usually go with a block of 6 (3x2) 1 Foundry,1 MEC LAB, and 4 Workshops. The discoutn after that isn't worth pursuing (IMO) and its more important to get *Engineers* (to reduce build times) than to save resources.
they become useful whenever you re around gauss/pulse tech
they could be great for building laser canons for aircrafts but to be effective at that particular time(july) it would mean you didn t build sats and uplink for a second continent in june/may, or that you ignored labs(and then your research would really be way behind, and you clearly don t need that)
as i play on high diffs, im not really sure if it s not possible to have both on classic, as you get more cash to start with, see if you can make it work
As the first post said, it matters. in vanilla the 50% reduction was a function of engineers, more engineers cheaper stuff to an absolute discount of 50%. which unless you have the second wave option for satellights deminishing returns isn't that significant. the Alloy cannon for example is 25 engineers to make, and 50 or so engineers is probably what you'll have by the time you get that far. so you'd only need workshops it it allowed you a sat uplink before the month ends so you can get up a wave of sats in time for each of the first 4 months.
In Long war yeah I'd probably suggest a block of 4 with foundries and cybernetics lab making it a block of 6. I think in Beta 13 the foundry and cyber lab adjacency bonus takes it past 50%
but yeah you need a bunch.
also gene lab is a lab adj bonus isn't it?
Yes labs are much more helpful in the first month or two but here a 4 block is more than enough for the whole game. Labs, Psilab, Genetics lab all count for this adjacency bonus. There are ppeople who go 3x2 here as well. I never felt the need due to having to wait out the resources and XP grind anyways.
It really comes down a little to how much production you are actually doing. IF you only do the minimum and skip certain tiers then Workshops lose it's value. If you are mass producing or doing large volumes all at ones then they are heavily needed. this is dictated by your strategy.
ie. I don't go for my second continent till month 3 or 4.
at which point I'm researching faster than I can get the alloys to make the guns I'd need.
I'm in midgame right now I think, was thinking about what to do with the extra space. I barely built any labs tbh, I think I have 2 and a gene lab with them and I've almost done all available research. I feel more comfortable spending cash on improving what I have and then getting the new stuff later on. Not sure if I should bother building another workshop at this point, but thanks for the advice!
I really concentrated aon getting enough energy to maintain the satellites on 2 continents I control right now. Long War is freaking brutal with the choices you have to make and the sacrifices you have to accept when making them
