*FIXED* Updating Excecutable Thread 06-Jan-2025
Just for clarification, everyone is having the issue that the game wont launch and after you press play it says "Updating Executable"

In that case this should serve as a new thread.

JAN-16-2025;It started working for me after waiting so many days. my advice is to install it and leave it installed. check back weekly until it starts.

Stil have the same problem:(
Still the same, seen several post where it works eventually after the millionth time pushing play :P

Just an update about this install, it was on my new laptop, just copied the files from my old laptop onto the new one and it still runs the updating executable. However, on the old laptop, the game runs fine :P

I can confirm that I get this issue. Reinstalled the game after hiatus - and then this...:-(
Also having this issue. Support did squat from this side.
same here, on both Windows and Linux(Bazzite)
I Got so sick of this issue I got it on GOG it works on GOG fine, steam's one is still broken AF.

So get it on GOG on sale if possible, I got so fed up with steam's version i uninstalled it.

XCOM 2 works fine on steam, not sure if chimera squad works on steam or not..

I can't refund because i end up refunding the whole ultimate collection.
man i was hopeful when i saw this thinking you guys might have a solution
Same, submitted a ticket to 2k support. Funny, they have XCOM2 as an option for "What Game?" when creating a new ticket, but not XCOM EU/EW. It is present later when it asks you to submit that same information again when filling out the actual ticket.

Well, I can at least say I feel a bit better knowing it isn't just mine, then.
Same here. Here is what I recommend:

1. Go to the store page.
2. Click on review the game.
3. Thumb it down.
4. Explain WHY.
5. Change your score when / if they fix this.
Ah that sucks that this issue is happening, I just reinstalled the game after seeing videos on long war to try (and fail) playing it again.

I've submitted a ticket to the customer site on 2k, sure, 99% unlikely anything will happen, but never know :)

Update 5 hours later, I got this from 2k:

First, I'd like to thank you for your passion regarding XCOM!

Our team is currently investigating this issue. In the meantime I would recommend also reporting this to Steam Support.
1. Go to the Steam Support site and choose your game.
2. Select "Gameplay or technical issue" and then "The game won't download or install".
3. Select "Contact Steam Support".
4. Provide them with the same information you sent us and hit "Send".

Idk what Steam support is meant to do really

I contacted steam support and they gave me this:

Hi Honey,

We appreciate the screenshot that you provided.

I'm sorry to hear XCOM: Enemy Unknown isn't launching. There are a few things that might keep a game from launching.

Please read our Preparing to Launch article for detailed troubleshooting steps that may help. The article may seem long, but completing all the steps listed will ensure your machine is in a good state and help rule out common problems users experience when trying to launch a game.

I know that you already reached out to game developer's official support team but if your game still doesn't launch after following the suggestions in the article, you will need to continue working with them as they will be a better source for troubleshooting their game.

I contacted support on 2k about this issue, and they're aware of the issue and claim to be working on it. But it's anyone's guess how long it will take for them to put out a solution, let alone how we'll even know about it.

is it possible to refund the game for this reason?
