Long War: council missions ridiculously early
I've only just gotten a few laser weapons and 3 sets of basic alloy armor, but I've already been on the fishing village mission, a few others, and now I'm on gangplank with RIDICULOUSLY overwhelming odds, much worse than any headquarters defense I've ever faced.

I know LW means you will skip, abort or lose some missions, but I really want the story missions to at least be playable. Instead I'm facing over 25 aliens in the first 2 rooms. Really ticked me off, this, anmd I'll probably be doing another restart because of it.

Is there a way to make them NOT appear too early in the game?

well I've never had it this early ingame, not in Long War at least, and it doesn't look like it's well balanced for the squad I have atm :(

I regularly get Site Recon as my first or second council mission. Gangplank is one of those missions that just go horriby wrong in lw because of the changes and the way it is scripted.

If you have a couple of guys with shotguns or even better a couple of assaults with CCS then the newfoundland mission is rediculously easy. That's why they added in the thin men. And even then I still find it the mission where I can just kick back and relax while going through the motions.

Due to the way the Mission packs are scripted though they'll always occur at the same time, and basically they become more of a risk vs reward in XCOM. I managed to complete all of the mission packs on my last run through.

The basic Idea of long war is that you're not meant to win every mission. If a mission is going terribad then run for the extract and get out of there.

While long war is objectively harder than vanilla, it is also far easier to recover a campaign if you manage to extract at least some of your troops.

@Alpha, I know all that. But like I said, I really don't want to skip the council missions, especially the ones that never repeat. I'll give that one a few more tries, but DAMN did it come up at a bad time.

Balance and Long War are basically antithesis to each other.

Anyway, Site Recon can occur as any council mission, EVEN IF YOU`VE NEVER SEE LIDS BEFORE. Still, just stick some shotties on some soldiers and you`re good. It`s not a hard mission at all.

Last night I had 35 chryssalids in newfoundland plus 4 stealthy worms (can never remember their names) at one point 12 chryssalids attacked at once.

Now in normal, I would usually have 1 flamer equipped mech present by this mission. Last night I only had basic weapons. No mods, not even scopes.

If it wasn't for the choke points on the map and an over indulgence with ap grenades, i'd have been slaughtered within 4 turns.

LW balance is just badly done. It's a slap in the face of the otherwise Excellent Mod.

How did you flag that many of them all at once this early in the game? Thats pretty much every one of the the roaming monsters.

I'm not disagreeing that there are problems particularly with the special council missions like Site Recon and Gangplank.

got it yesterday. good god am I glad that I decided to go with bronzeman. this was the slowest, most careful game I've ever played in XCOM, I've probably overwatched more than anything else.

Got very lucky as well with 1 soldier being down to 1 hp twice and only losing my SHIV.

39 aliens the mission had, which may not be an overwhelming number for LW, but the groups spawned in absolutely random places, including from behind, and it was very difficult not to trigger 2 or 3 pods at once. Also barely had enough ammo to suppress the cyberdisks so neither one of them managed to throw any nades.

really hope not to see any other council missions for a while

Tell me, did you face more than one Cyberdisc? I just tried it and got ♥♥♥♥♥♥ when 2 Cyberdiscs appeared out of nowhere after disabling the second pylon right behind my squad.

ah, just replied to your topic :)

well there are 2 cyberdisks in that mission but their spawns are random, sometimes I had both spawn in the 1st room and had my a** wiped all over the floor, the other time I had one spawn behind me and one just casually drifted into sight from the 3rd room.

solution is higher positioning, and keeping them suppressed. also any kind of shredder ammo
