Updating Executable fixed or not?
Got the XCOM collection last sale, was playing other things till now, everytime i launch the game it says "Updating Executable" and then... nothing happens? I don't know if this is the same issue that everyone has been complaining about but i am also not sure if this is a new one?

First time attempting to even play the game to encounter this. Has anyone been able to play recently or at all?

saw some other discussions that a fix has been released? yet i still have the problem.
I tried disabling DLCs, did the certificate thing and verified files.

And also saw someone mentioning waiting 48 hours? is that even a thing? i see a lot of conflicting fixes and issues but i have no idea what is going on.

I've tried everything numerous times. Tried with both the LW and LWR mods, but nothing works. I installed XCOM 2 and ran every possible exe there.
I even tried running it on Steam Deck.
I just want to play one of my favorite games.

XCOM 2 has the same issue also? How long has this been happening? is 2K even going to bother? or did i waste my money for nothing?

The solution, as stupid as it sounds, is to just install the game, try launching it once or twice and then just wait. Thats it. Its what has worked for most people, including me. I tried all the other supposeded fixes and none worked.

Do not try to reinstall. Just let it sit. Try it once or twice after 1 or 2 days. If nothing happens then just continue waiting. It took around 5 days for it to decide to just work for me.

I haven't had an issue launching/playing the game since then.

*EDIT* Also, no, Xcom 2 does not have the same issue. Installing Xcom 2 and running it and then running Xcom 1 is one of the many supposed solutions.

Wow that has to be the most ridiculous solution i have heard.. how did they even do that or make that possible? alright.. I guess I'll wait and try that then. i'll have to play other things in the mean time.

I tried this and it did finally work, only for another issue to emerge. I tried playing EW and it crashed my PC at the end of the first mission every single time I tried. So yeah, you can 'fix' the executable issue, but then, at least for me, you get this one.

I am wondering if its an issue with EW though as some people had the same trouble but stated the base game without EW works just fine. Whatever it is someone, somewhere majorly screwed up.

No idea if its an EW issue. I know some people have some issues with EW but can do EU with no problems. Some people also can do EW with no issues but have a problem with EU. Since you can get the game working I suggest trying some compatibility solutions to try to solve the crashing issue. Its what usually works for me for other older games where crashing is an issue.

But yeah I agree that someone majorly and royally screwed up.

Played fine in the past, uninstalled. Waited maybe a year or so, reinstalled, executable update error now. I suspect it has something to do with the latest Windows updates and their push to stop supporting Windows 10 so they can strip people their money for Windows 11.

I tried reinstalling base game without EW or other dlc, still got the updating executable message and nothing. So it might be an issue for some people and not others. Still seems to go back to what someone mentioned earlier, a DRM issue that times itself out. I will give it a few days and then try to play again.
DUDE with a GUN Dec 21, 2024 @ 5:32pm
It began doing this today after I verified the integrity of the game cache. It worked fine literally minutes before I did that.

I tested with uninstalling and reinstalling the DLCs I wonder if i screwed up this 48 hour thing or not, or is the 48 hour thing only for the base game? and DLCS are fine? well idk i have yet to get it launch.

Saw conflicting reports that windows update isn't the cause. I still have no clue what's going on i'm currently just waiting hoping it'll launch as someone suggested earlier.

It seemed to happen to me right after a Windows 11 update, like I played, updated, tried to play again and it wont work.
