There is always more to a game than just loot and kill. What planet you think you are from?
If you can get the game to work nowadays like in dos-box 0.74 to run it in or something like that.
And the game is a little clunky nowadays since it came out in 1997, I think Steam may still sell it along with the other original XCOM games.
You will have to do more in this game to get ahead. (like steal items from the police station to start off first.)
i like to wait around for a ufo & then jump out go boogity boo cave their face in with my club & at the end of the fight my guys get exp/lvl up & can then do more awseome things...rince & repeat....thats fun for me
Blood Bowl (only multiplayer, make sure its a decent competently run league). Looks different, plays different but I bet if you like Classic/Impossible Ironman XCOM you will also enjoy Blood Bowl.
You could also try Blackguards, a fantasy turn-based RPG with focus on combat or Aarklash Legacy a real-time pausable (and you need to pause it) fantasy RPG with focus purely on combat. If you play either of these games on hard the challenge is very high and you have to play carefully and thoughtfully like XCOM on the higher difficulties. However, ironman isn't a possibility, you will die many, many times in both :-p
And, if you jsut want to create a party, kill stuff, loot and level-up, can't go wrong with Icewind Dale :-D
Silent Storm / Silent Storm Sentinels - another tactical RPG with WW2 setting. There is a story but if you want you can walk around for ages to kill enemy patrols and get some of the unique encounters. Completely destructible environment. Only gripe was the range of grenades, made them almost unusable. Loved every bit of it, especially panzerkleins... :)
Hammer & Sickle - successor of Silent Storm, never played it, reviews were poor but if it is only a bit like the above it might be worth a try
Expeditions Conquistador - turn-based combat, pretty decent game, party management, levelling - no items though, can increase/decrease item lvl but that's it
Freedom Force/Freedom Force vs. the 3rd Reich - pauseable real-time, superheroes, levelling, even complete customization of heroes/powers - no equipment
Not on Steam/PC but well worth a look:
Valkyria Chronicles - anime style with fixed combats/story - no escaping the story here...;) You get to choose equipment and levelling and character specific traits make every troop you have quite unique.
The new shadowrun i found mediocre , it's ok but nothing memorable. I've played about 10 hours of blackguards but it's a bit of a slog. Also played 'Omerta' , the combat was ok as you levelled up but the management side was very basic.
The only other game i enjoyed which was similiar was jagged allaince back in action , it got very average reviews and it's not as good as x-com but i enjoyed it. It's a lot more fiddly and not as polished or as user friendly but i liked it.
God i hope firaxis make an x-com 2 after they make the new alpha centauri.
