Mimetic skin or "what were they thinking?"...
Just picked up Enemy Within on the recent sale.

I did one campaign clear on EU before. Decided to do an an Impossible campaign this time. Things were pretty fun (in the Dwarf Fortress meaning of the term[dwarffortresswiki.org]) until I realized just how absolutely overpowered Mimetic Skin gene mod is.

At first I gave Mimetic Skin to my assault scouts, thinking it a worthy investment. Can't argue wtih that, since it allowed me to basically ninja every meld cannister regardless of enemies' presence (you just need to figure out how exactly the gene mod works). But.

Then I splurged on it for my covert ops sniper (because gunslinger). After the first mission, my squad got quickly reorganized from 3 carry snipers to all-sniper one (mixed squadsight and snap shot).

I just finished a battleship clear without being spotted once. Snapshot snipers (two of them) used as scouts, squadsight snipers (the rest) hanging in the back laughing and bringing pain across the map when its needed. Since they all also have muscle fiber density, finding good oversight perch is a non-issue. Low Cover ensures I can always stealth them whenever it's needed (which also gives a nice increase to critical chance). Not that it's needed, since even before double-tap nothing is going to come even close to my designated shooters anyway...

Suddenly the game turned into a serious case of easy mode. Nothing like parking a spotter right next to the enemy group with shots coming from way beyond the aliens' spotting range. I assume my spotters have received extra training since they don't break out in manic giggles whenever some four-lines-hp-bar alien gets insta-vaporized by coordinated volley from afar.

Or takes 30+ damage in two headshot critical hits.

As an aside, kind of wonders how exactly mimetic skin helps my soldiers camo into the background since... you know. They are supposedly wearing armor.

Unless they are new-age snipers, running around "moon-clad."

*Shudder*

It was worse before they updated the cost. Still the ability to be near invincibile is hard to pass up at any price. Do not know how it got passed the concept stage.

All true - took me a while to figure out just what exactly is the mechanics of that mod - it gets ridiculous! Try combining (if you can) mimetic + psi mind control... poor Aliens. Xcom becomes an excercise in genocide.

By the time you've got mimetic and mind control you'll want a diversion from your ability to just mop the place up with firepower.

I actually haven't tried that, though. Sounds fun :)

The Aliens provide all the fire power you'll ever need at this point :)

Oh, and try "Lone Wolf" acheivemnet with one mimetric psi. That IS fun. But careful - might give you bad dreams.

overpowered, should do away with it. Same for ghost armor.

When difficulty settings and second wave options just aren't enough,it's time for house rules my friends.

example:

No MECs
No Gmods
One sniper
No DLC missions
One PSI
No exploitable second wave options. (unless doing a all second wave run)

etc etc etc

But most important,Frau Vahlens speech must be turned ON,that will really test your metal. =P
