Is there a punishment for skipping Newfoundland?
Hey all,

The prize for completing the Newfoundland mission (you know, *that* mission), is reduced panic. However, no countries are currently in the red and I'm wondering if there is any point in me taking my troops on this incredibly risky mission. Is it really worth it if I don't need the panic reduction that badly?

Is there a punishment, a panic rise perhaps, for not accepting the mission?

I don't believe there is a punishment. I lost Canada as a council member, then that mission showed up. I figured "What's the point?", and I declined it. Great for chitin plating, though.

No, it's just another council mission. However, really? You are going to skip such fun mission?

IIRC you dont get to keep any loot from this mission.

and I agree with alex, its a fun mission to do. First time round, it will knock you for six, but after that you can learn a lot of little tips and tricks to make it easier.

I have completed it previously... with a single surviving soldier.

I'm trying to complete Classic/Ironman for the first time and while things aren't going perfectly, they are going well. Kind of. I don't want to throw it all away for no reason.

Yeah that is good reasoning, declining missions where you could lose one or all of your high ranking troops is sometimes a better idea than trying it for little to no reward. Council missions generally just provide a reward with no punishment for faliure, I have ignored a few without repremand and Newfoundland is no different.

Another one to ALWAYS avoid is Portent. Portent is such bulls**t with its infinate accuracy Thin Man squad drops in the first month you should always avoid it on Ironman or you absulutely will lose at least one soldier or more likely all of them at once. At least the dock mission is fun you know? But Portent thinks a bit of loose change and a couple of engeneers is worth near certain death.

Do people really have a hard time with this mission? I don't think I've ever lost a troop on it. Of course my squads are usually composed ot mostly Heavies and Assaults. Damage focused rapid fire assaults laugh at Chrysallids, and my Bullet swarm heavies love enemies that run right up next to them. I frequently don't have colonels by that mission, but the one time I was able to bring a ITZ sniper with me that mission it was a COMPLETE joke. It was great fun mowing down 'Lids until the whale stopped spawning them.

That mission is a GREAT place to farm XP for a couple of lower ranked troops. It's worth it for that. Plus, it's just a fun mission rewards be damned.

Lolz the docks mission got real scary real soon, while escaping lol. Newfounland one isnt as bad, just gotta make sure crysalids dont get near you :D

Hmm, never thougt this mission is hard. I beleive this is the perfect mission for squadsight snipers:
one or two squadsight snipers on the edge near the first building and couple of heavies with reaper rounds or lasers, one support with 3 medikits and assault with reaper rounds or two supports with medikits should do the mission.
Basically, I've farmed a lot of XP over there: i've never saw my soldiers come back with double rank promotions:)

If you don't do Portent you can't do the Operation Progeny storyline, which means missing out on 4 guaranteed psionic soldiers.

Also, Portent isn't that bad if you know where the aliens spawn and take your time, especially on the way back. You can just not move the VIP and position all your soldiers on the roof and overwatch, then move the VIP ahead to trigger them, and kill them all in one turn before they can shoot back.
Portent? The dam or the Exalt pick up? Both where increadibly easy.

New Foundland is made considerably easier if you know how it works, and especially if you bring a Mec who can do collateral damage on the fish. There is no time crunch until you spot the whale, so you can spend a turn reloading, or spend a couple turns just sitting there waiting for things like Run and Gun or Headshot to come off cooldown.
