the whole motivitation of the uberethereals is kinda murky and inconsistent - especially in contrast to the original.
and besides the heroic sacrifice and earth not getting destroyed, there is no real ending, no closure, no nothing: No partying on the streets, no heads of state waking up from psi-induced stupidity, Vahlen and Shen don't fall into each others arms and deciding to fight illness and hunger instead of torturing and bulidng weapons etc.
The Operator, who was so chatty at the beginning of the game, is too lazy to say "Well done Commander, you saved my planet and all my favorite popstars" or "Looks like I need a new job".
A little more here could have gone a long way.
You thought that was sad? Now this is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sad, lol

Can't beat the original ending. The modern reimagining is way too soft.
"The aliens attempt to exterminate all humanity, destroying cities and poisoning the air and sea. The resistance of earth armies is futile in the face of vastly superior technology. Surviving generations suffer terrible mutations as they flee alien destruction. They are rounded up into slave camps to help transform earth into an alien colony which is part of some unknown empire.
The knowledge gained through the XCom project is lost forever. You have failed to save the earth."
GAME OVER MAN, GAME OVER.
